November 15, 1946 ~ September 13, 1983


Carl Owens, age 36, 14540 Plainview Drive, Detroit, MI. husband of Clementine Dansby Owens, died Tuesday, September 13, 1983 at the Mt. Carmel Hospital in Detroit. Born November 15, 1946 in Mercer Co. he was the son of Pete and Martha Ann Sanders Owens, Harrodsburg, a 1964 graduate of Harrodsburg High School, an employee of the Ford Motor Co. in Detroit, a US Army veteran of the Vietnam Conflict, and a member of the Centennial Baptist Church in Harrodsburg.

Survivors other than his wife and parents include: 1 son Carl Owens Jr. and 1 daughter, Carlena Owens, both of Lexington; 3 brothers, Pete Owens Jr, Lexington, Robert Owens, Charlotte NC, and William Lee “Fly” Owens, Detroit.

Funeral services were conducted 1:30 pm Saturday, September 17, 1983 at the Centennial Baptist Church by Rev. L.L. Garr. Burial was in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Harrodsburg. Visitation was after 6 pm Friday, September 16, 1983 at the Parks Funeral Home in Harrodsburg.

Active pallbearers were: Jimmy Boyd, Lloyd Browning, J.D. Short, Albert Mitchell, John Mitchell, and John Smith, III. Honorary bearers were: Lowell Lay, Winfield Allen, J.B.Chenault, Robert Harris, John Harris, and Sam Wheat.

Carl was the coolest guy we ever met. Nothing bothered him. We never saw him upset and we never saw him run (or even walk fast). He was, like his older brothers before him, a great athelete. I have a Little League photo of my VFW team that I am proud of, because among all of those white kids, Carl was standing right next to me. Carl died way too young. It would be a real treat to see what he might be like today. We miss him.
