I met my husband at New Paltz. I have been married since 1973 and living on my husband's family farm. The land is beautiful. We have 900 acres of fields, woods and 2 ponds. But the work is unending, the men have little time off for family or relaxation. We have a milking herd of 190 cows, plus heffers and calves. We also have an orchard of apples, pears, peaches, plums and raise blueberries as well. We have a small farm store and sell our produce to local supermarket chains. Our milk is processed and shipped to Stewarts Shops. (like 7-eleven on LI). I have never been involved in the farm work except for a few weekends, long ago, when I worked in the store. I started teaching the Sept. after we were married and I taught for 6 years.I took a maternity leave, then substituted a great deal while raising my children. I returned full time to teaching about 9 years ago. Both of my sons decided not to remain on the farm, one is a computer programmer and the other is an office manager for an insurance firm. My mother now lives with us and so I know first hand what the term "sandwich generation" means. I enjoy traveling. We always take a week long summer trip and I also go away with my mother once a year in the spring, so she gets a chance to get away too.(It certainly is a pleasure for me as well.) Cruises work best for us as she walks with a four wheeled walker and the ship is easy to get around with entertainment, meals, casino, pool all within a confined space. Of course, real life has been happening since 1968 with the usual problems: illness, death of family and friends, financial worries, child raising, crazy family situations, and all of the other things that make up the real part of our lives.
