I think I learned that Ann had died (c. 1977) when our first child, Martin, who is now 39 years old, was only one.  I had a crush on Ann when we were in fifth grade, and I remember doing homework with her at her dining room table after braving Ann's dog, Maggie, a bull dog who threw herself against the front door so ferociously when I knocked, that I thought she was going to break it down and kill me.  Ann was a great piano player, and I remember going to one of her recitals.  Her parents were very proud of her, and it must have been heartbreaking to them that she died so young.

Bob, Ann was my next door neighbor growing up and Maggie hated me, so I totally get what you mean! Ann was diagnosed with leukemia at 19, but was just told she had a blood disorder. She received treatment and it went into remission. She went to Barnard, graduated and married and they made their home in New York. Ann started having symptoms again at 28 and realized what her disease was. She died within a year, at 29.  She was a wonderful person, and worthy of your "crush"!

Ann's mother, Florence, was English.  She had come to this country after World War II as a "war bride", married to an American GI.  Her father, Dan, was devoted to Florence, who must have been a bit homesick.

Maggie, whose slobber was worse than her bite, was an English Bulldog.  The family also had an English car, a tiny Morris Minor, then a rarity in the U.S.

Florence used to pick up Ann after school at Chatham Park Elementary.  She was a lovely and generous woman who always offered a ride to anyone keeping Ann company.  One day she packed about eight of us into a car with the interior space of the original V.W. Beetle, then took us all home.  It was the best ride of our young lives.

I think often of Ann and her family.  They were all exceptional.  Maggie - not so much :)
