In Memory

William Edward Scarlett

Services were held on Saturday, May 7, 2011 at 11 AM at Celebration Christian Center, 1135 Bluebell Lane in Livermore. Near Springtown and the golf course.

It seems that it was tied into the car accident he had 2009.  He had been having seizures that had been getting more frequent and severe.  The though is that he died from a brain aneurism.

I found out about this in May of 2011 and thought I had posted it, but somehow I let it slip.  I'm sure many others knew Bill better than I did, but not many for a longer period of time. We both attended grammar school together at All Saints in addition to Hayward High so it does seem that I have lost a family member.  We had so many shared experiences over the formative time in our lives.  I last saw him at Home Depot shortly after his motorcycle accident and he told me about the headaches.  He had planned on attending our last reunion but he didn’t feel like his health would allow him to do so.   We had planned on meeting up, but with me moving to Missouri in April of 2011 it never happened.  My memory will forever remain of him in his Hayward High football uniform, small in stature but large in heart.

On May 2, 2000, my second day as the Business Manager (Controller) at San Leandro Unified School District, I asked to have the Maintenance Department send someone to build book shelves for me.

To my surprise, Bill Scarlett showed up!  We  looked at each other, and both said at the same time "You look familiar!"  We then saw a lot of each other through the 4 years that I worked there.  Bill was a carpenter, and did great work, and was always able to accommodate any requests of the Business Office. Contrary to popular belief, most school district employees work very hard, and are not compensated all that well.  It never seemed to affect Bill's attitude.

I left San Leandro in 2004, and when friends let me know that Bill had been in an accident, and then passed away, it was very sad news.  San Leandro lost a great employee, and our class lost a great member!

I too have let the issue of Bill's passing slip which is not right as Bill was such a wonderful guy.  We met on the first day of High School.  I was immediately won over by his wonderful and unique sense of humor. He could set me laughing with just a word.  He was a funny guy with many interests.  We used to enjoy archery and would go into the Hayward Hills and shoot arrows at anything that moved or didn't move :  trees, boxes, rocks.  He began racing motorcycles early in High School (with Dan Dawson and other Hayward Hills guys)  and while I was too chicken to even sit on one I used to listen to his stories about racing  and can still discuss  the sport without sounding stupid (i.e. Bill was a Bultaco man) .  We lost touch after High School and I was saddened to learn of his passing.  I am sure he brightened the spirit of everyone who knew him.
