Enlisted in the USAF, 3/69 to 12/72, serving overseas as a radio/intercept analyst/N Vietnamese linguist. Was a letter carrier with the Postal Service from 6/81 to 3/85. Was a postal inspector (federal law enforcement agent) with the Postal Service 3/85 to 12/06 until mandatory retirement at age 57.

BA in history from Madison College in 1976. Attended graduate school in history at James Madison University from 1977 to 1979.
