My neighbor since grade school & my first serious crush. We were friends for life. RIP James.
Bob was a good friend and fun guy. His friendship and kindness gave me the confidence I needed to rise above the mean girls in high school. I had saved all his letters from Vietnam, but they are lost now... too many moves. I'll never forget the day I read in the paper about his death. I cried and cried, and was so angry that he died in some useless war. Still think of him often and what might have been.
Bob was a rifleman serving with Hotel Company, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division. On April 30, 1967, his unit was engaged in a battle known as The Hill Fights (or the First Battle of Khe Sanh) against the NVA 325th C Division. The fighting took place on several hill masses north of the Khe Sanh Combat Base in the I Corps Tactical Zone. During the battle, thirteen Marines and a Navy corpsman were killed, including Bob, who suffered a fatal rifle wound to his right chest.
I'll never forget you, Bob.

Hi Sandy, Haven't spoken with you for a while. I'm living now on the Outer Banks, North Carolina. I still miss San Francisco, but island living is kind of nice too. Glad you are doing well. Take care, Marion
