Donations for Jeff

Jeff Winicour suffered brain trauma as a result of an AVM.  AVM is a cerebral arteriovenous malformation is an abnormal connection between the arteries and veins in the brain that usually forms before birth. The cause of cerebral arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is unknown. The condition occurs when arteries in the brain connect directly to nearby veins without having the normal vessels (capillaries) between them.  An AVM rupture occurs because of pressure and damage to blood vessel tissue. This allows blood to leak into the brain or surrounding tissues, and reduces blood flow to the brain.  Cerebral AVMs occur in less than 1% of people. Although the condition is present at birth, symptoms may occur at any age. Hemorrhages occur most often in people ages 15 - 20, but can also occur later in life. Some patients with an AVM also have cerebral aneurysms, (pubmed health)http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0001783/

Jeff has always loved writing.  Since his stroke, he has written beautiful poems, blogs, essays of his thoughts and experiences. His words speak volumes and he is an inspiration to us all.  He reminds us not to take life for granted, to appreciate the small steps and that each living day, is a miracle.

Jeff wrote this letter (see below) a couple of years ago to all his friends and family thanking them for their kind words of support and encouragement.  He starts of by saying he has come a long way since the day he almost died, and he sure has.

We, as the Highland Park HS graduating class of 1991 would like to raise funds to support Jeff.  There have been efforts to publish his writings and poetry to help inspire others in similar situations.  His parents have also identified equipment that is needed for his rehab. We have set up this special page on our reunion website so we can continue to inspire Jeff as he has inspired us.  All of the funds raised will go directly to his support. Please click the button below if you would like to contribute; you may donate as much or as little (even $1 is appreciated!) as you would like. If you have any questions, would prefer to send a check, or would like to send a note that will be delivered to Jeff, please email

Thank you all, and thank you Jeff for inspiring us, giving us encouragement and reminding us to appreciate the small stuff.
