Well, after high school I had no idea of whether or not I should go directly to college or try to save up some money and work in the meantime, so I chose the latter and spent 5 years working off and on, studying computer science and abstract mathematics, and just enjoying my time off while I could. I never learned to drive (until recently), so I couldn't really go anywhere anyway.
I started going to college in 1999, when I took distance ed classes in Computer Programming from NRI for a year or so. I started programming in middle school, but they gave you a free computer with the program, so I took it in the hopes that I could get a good job in computer software development. haha lol like that was gonna happen in Hood River... 8)
So, in the interest of both seeking a higher education and remaining close to my family, I started attending EOU in 2002. I transferred to PSU in Portland in the Fall of 2004 with a friend since I knew that the CS program was better there, and I wanted to give it a shot.
However, circumstances forced me to return to La Grande, and that's where I reside today whilst finishing my collegiate education.
I visited Portland prior to that time during college and fell in love with the city!
I would have dual-majored in Mathematics and CS, but thanks to general ed courses, it's taking me longer to graduate then I expected. I'll be done in 2009...
In the meantime, I partied a lot, studied a lot, met great friends (amazingly) and all in all got to do all the things I wanted to do in middle and high school, but for some reason never seemed possible. It's refreshing to know that a huge geek like myself can make friends and be fairly popular with people on campus.
Also, I met my wife-to-be whilst attending college last year. A friend of mine whom I met thru an ex-girlfriend introduced me to her when I was taking summer school courses here in La Grande. She's the light of my life and she makes me feel at peace and truly loved. I knew she was special ever since I met her last August, and this August she's gonna become my wife. 8)
The future: Well, things have changed a lot since I embarked upon this journey called life. I'm planning on having kids in the next couple of years or so (I love kids), going to graduate school in Washington for a Ph.D in Computer Science / Neurological Computing, graduating from college and finally learning how to drive so I can visit my friends and family eventually.
I've also done extensive research into my family's history, finally gotten back in touch with my estranged father, and just grown up and changed alot since my teenage years.
Ultimately, my life goals are to become a pioneering research scientist, a great father and an amateur musician who has plenty of free time to tinker with things and pursue my rather esoteric hobbies.
The first time I've ever played Doom was in my freshman year during drafting class. Since there were a cluster of drafting computers in the back of the room, a few friends and I would sneak back there after class and play it. Well, one time we were playing it before class, and the teacher came in and scared the hell out of me when he said to turn that off and get started drafting; I wasn't expecting that. It was still pretty funny though. 8)
