Obituary of Norman Miller Hubbard Jr.

Norman Hubbard
       1949-2021

Norman Miller Hubbard, Jr. aka “Norm-Dawg” “Papa” “Boss", passed away on August 26, 2021, at the age of 71 in Hockley, Texas, after a 26-year battle with cancer. Norman was born on November 9, 1949, in Houston, Texas where he grew up in Spring Branch and graduated from Spring Woods High School in 1968.

He started working at a young age. In junior high school, he would help bale and put-up hay at a friend’s family ranch. In high school, he went to work for his dad at N.M. Hubbard Construction, where he learned to log timber, drive haul trucks, and load and operate heavy equipment. When he was not working, he loved racing his dirt bikes and entering motor-cross competitions. He loved racing (drag-racing) his muscle cars on the streets of Spring Branch.

In 1973, at the age of 23, he formed his own company, Hubco Construction Company, and was known around town as the “hippy of the asphalt paving business”. It wasn’t until 1978, that he changed the name of his company to Hubco, Inc. He grew his business and became one of the largest asphalt paving contractors in Harris County. He successfully ran his business for 40 years, until he retired in 2015 and began consulting part-time, at his oldest daughter’s company, TLC Construction Contract Services.

Norman enjoyed many hobbies. He rode horses with his daughters and loved watching his children and his grandkids ride and show their horses all over the United States and Canada. He cherished teaching his grandchildren all about tractors and heavy equipment. He enjoyed deer hunting, honky-tonks, dancing, and competitive skeet shooting.

Notably, Norman was the past President of the Asphalt Paving Association and a committed member of the Houston Contractors Association for many years. As a devoted lifetime member and committeeman of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, Norman served as the past Chairman of the Trail Ride Committee and served on the Equipment Acquisitions Committee and World Championship Barbecue Committee.

To further his commitment to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, youth and education, Norman was an extremely dedicated supporter of several local FFA (Future Farmers of America) chapters, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Art Auction and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo FFA Auctions.

Norman was preceded in death by his father, Norman Miller Hubbard, Sr. and his mother, Almeda Joines Hubbard. Norman is survived by his brothers, Richard Paulsel and wife Gloria, Jesse Michael Hubbard and wife Lynn and Thomas Nathan Hubbard. He is survived by his daughters; Hayley Lauren Gwyn and husband John Christopher Gwyn (their children John Tyler, Grant Louis, and Gabrielle Lauren), Kristen Nicole Hubbard and daughter Kelby Miller Hubbard, Karrie Miller Hubbard and son Dillon Miller Gonzalez. He is also survived by his wife, Christine Louise MooMaw Hubbard.

The family would like to say a very special thank you to the following special and loving caregivers; Flossie Stewart, Kimberly Roberson, Corace Ashton, Laura Gonzalez and Sarah Ballah.

Burial:  Woodlawn Cemetery, Houston, Texas

Norman Hubbard was always an outstanding guy. I have many great memories of Norman.  I’m in the same 4th grade class picture that Florence Schroeder Kirsch posted on Norman.  I was very sad to hear of his passing, and my heart and condolences go out to the Hubbard family.

There are some things that are better expressed by our feelings than by our words. What I feel about Norman's passing cannot be expressed by words alone.

What a tremendous loss of a great friend. Norman had a heart bigger that Texas and would do anything in the world for someone whether he knew them or not.  Rest easy my friend...

I have known Norman, since 6 th grade at Spring Woods Junior High,  he was an outstanding person, and a joy to be around. He will be missed by many whom were fortunate to be his friend. He will be riding in the big sky above, waving his hat and smiling down on us all. See you later, Pard.

I know Norman was a man who helped others without fanfare. He was a true friend.I am grateful for our visits...he was such a fighter about his cancer....it is no small miracle he lived until 71. love and comfort to his daughters.

Some of us have known Norman for more than fifty years. As we say goodbye to a long-time friend and classmate, may you rest in peace, Norman.

Norman was a great guy and a true friend to all.  I dont think I'll ever forget the reunion year we all gathered at Papa Blakeky's and saw Normans fly by exit in his hellicopter, with his arm out the window shaking that middle finger so long to all in clasic Norman Hubbard fashion. Norman will truly be missed by all and our class President Bob summed it up to a T!!  Peace be to his daughters, his brother Mike and the rest of the family and take cumfort knowing that Norman is no longer in pain and is truely at rest.   What a guy we all lost!!!!
