Graduated from Rice University in 1984 with double major in Biophysics and English. Worked at Texas Instruments through college. Received master's degree in Science Writing from Johns Hopkins in 1985. Wrote for Consumer Reports for a couple of years. Returned to Houston in 1988 to marry Paul Wood. Founded Carr Communications, which provided marketing communications, PR, and freelance journalism with an emphasis on health and technology. Moved to Austin in 1994. Currently a contributing editor at Consumer Reports on Health and frequent contributor to other Consumer Reports publications. Also involved in activites with teens--lead a girl scout troop, manage 2 Destination Imagination teams, and help with boy scouts.
