In a nutshell, after college I taught world cultures at my old alma mater, Ocean View Junior High, for 8 years. It came with the territory that I'd stay with Moslems in Turkey, visit Amazon tribes people, trek in Kashmir, raft in Peru, hike in Ecuador, and roustabout in Western Australian shearing sheds. I worked for Raytheon as an expeditor/buyer as a temp for 6 months, wrote catalogue text and worked in the shipping department of Murrays Marine in Carpinteria for a few years. Currently I'm teaching and learning from preggies, druggies, taggers, gangbangers, outlaws, artists, and eccentrics in Carpinteria's continuation high school. I genuinely like these characters most days. For fun, I was a competitive paddler in Hokuloa, Ventura's outrigger canoe club for 15 years. That was curtailed two years ago when I married my best friend for 18 years—Marc Soltan—and moved to Santa Barbara. I've traded my paddle for a backpack. Marc and I spend weekends hiking in the foothills, backpacking in the Eastern Sierras, skiing, gardening, or feathering our nest. Woodworking and attending the New West Symphony are two of Marc's passions; reading a good book is one of mine.
