funny story Posted Sunday, July 22, 2012 03:10 PM I met my ex at harvey's Broiler. Now I believe it is Johnny's Broiler. It's been in a few movies. My ex's sister and I were dating. We went to Harvey's after a movie one night and my ex was there with her date (whom I knew).. That's when my ex said to her sister, 'let's switch cars'. guess what. all parties were happy they did. Nancy was from San Gabriel. We were married 35 years. |

funny story Posted Saturday, November 24, 2012 07:52 AM John, that is a funny story. Harvey's was opened in 1958. Harvey's was renamed Johnies Broiler in 1968 and closed in 2001. Sadly, the building was a used car dealership from 2002-2006. In early 2002 there was a grass roots effort to preserve the building and the State of California's Historic Resources Commission unanimously voted to include Johnies Broiler on the State's official Register of Historical Places. Approval of the property's owner is also required, however, Smyrniotis objected on economic grounds. Nonetheless, The Broiler's "eligible" status offers the same protections as if it were actually listed.
On a Sunday morning in 2007 the owner, without permits, began demolishing the building and when people saw what was happening, they went to the police and the domolishing was stopped that same afternoon. As you can see the only thing left staning was the Johnie's sign.
In 2008 Bob's Big Boy began construction. Part of the agreement was the building had to be constructed just as it was in 1958. Bob's Big Boy opened in October 2009 and has weekly car shows and car hop nights.

harvey's (Bob's) Broiler Posted Tuesday, November 27, 2012 01:46 AM thank you for the update Paul. I didn't know the current disposition. It was great seeing you at the reunion as well as all those attending. Some I saw and didn't even get a chance to talk to. I did enjoy the event and wish it was a bit longer. There is no end to the praise to Ed and his crew for another excellant event. Again, thanks for the update, I have not been in that area for many years. John K. |
