I was seated at a table placed at an angle where I could not see the blackboard and the kids around me  at the table were very distracting.  Miss Massy showed my mom all the papers I had not done, with big red circles on them.  She told my mom she had given me "big fat zeroes".  My mom said red circles did not mean anything to me and I probably thought it a good trade: red circles for no work.  Mom said I needed to be spanked if there was to be a meaningul consequence for not doing my work.  After pirncipal spanked me, I told her I did not know about the work.  She said it was written on the board. I said I couldn't see anything on the board.  I finally got a better seat and away from boys that drew fighter planes and bombs during class, and the girl who stole my Prince Bertram the Bad book.

I was in trouble a lot for doing what was right  or fun in my own eyes. Every new thing was a complete surprize to me, that it was wrong and not grandly creative.  I got a lot of spankings and a lot of standing out in the hall and even was made to duck walk in from recess one time.  I think I was in fifth grade before I ever made it through a six week grading period with out getting spanked by the principal for some odd thing or another.
