Kevin was more brilliant than I could appreciate. He deserved special kindness, and was probably on the spectrum, though back then it was not recognized. He was gone before anyone could realize his dynamic. May God have mercy on him and us all.

Thanks Greg Cowan for this post about Kevin Shrote. I've thought of him so often over the years as I learned about Asperbergers syndrome and the autism spectrum. I wish I - and our classmates - had the knowledge and tools to treat Kevin and others who were 'different' with more kindness.

Thank you to Gregory and Diane for your comments about Kevin Shrote. Those of us who knew him and loved him could not protect him from the cruelty of the world at large. I remember many happy days with him, his humor, and his kindness. HIs father was an audiophile and we spent many hours listening to music on his father's top of the line stereo, where I learned to appreciate Holst's The Planets. Kevin dreamed of making an ultrasmall nuclear reactor to power the world. Who knows what might have been. I'm happy to know that he has not been forgotten.

I didn't know Kevin personally, only in passing in the hallway or in class.  I did know he was a genius at chemistry.  He went to Butler University on a full scholarship.  Such a tragic end
