I think I still have bruises when I tried to tackle David at the line of scrimmage some 48 years ago!
Didn't get to see you near often enough. Now, I regret not visiting you in East Texas...
Robert.

David was one of the most incredible athletes I saw in any sport. State heavyweidght weight lifting champ and as fast when he needed to be as he was strong. I still have a vivid memory of our senior year when Alan Wright, our fastest back, turned the corner and had one defender between him and the goal line. Out of nowhere came big #75, passed Alan who was at a dead run, and obliterated the defensive back.
Another great memory of David was his hearty laugh that seemed to come from his toes. It happened almost every time you saw him. Rest in peace David - you still live in our memories.

I did not play football but do have vivid memories of watching my first practice session during my sophmore year and David was a Junior. Rather than just tackling running backs, David would PICK THEM UP as they ran to the line of scrimmage and then had enough strength to humanely bur firmly place them on their backsides without braking their bones with a body slam.
Although he was a 70 graduate, the 69 football crew would have not gone to the quarter finals without David.Yet his smile exceeded his tremendous athlectic ability. Rest in peace.

Although I didn't play football at Irving, I did lift weights with David.
He was a fierce competitor and an absolute BEAST!
I had seen David only a few times over the years, but he was always ready to share memories of our High School weight lifting workouts and competitions. Good Times!
RIP David
My Deepest Sympathies to your family!

I had the honor of attending David Howard's funeral service Thursday, April 14th. He was my very good friend in High School. We did most everything together to include get in trouble.
David's Letter to God was found in his Bible. It should help you remember him in a kind way and better understand who he had become over time.
QUOTE: "Heavenly Father, Fill my heart and mind with your word. Fill me with thy Holy Spirit and give me the tools needed to spread your word. Help me reach out and share what your son Jesus has done for me. Let me share the change in my life. I want to be able to help others to allow the compassion of Jesus to enter their hearts. If I can just plant the seed of Jesus in others, in time your son, Jesus, will grow within them. Jesus will be the one who completes the work of the planted seed. Just allow me to be the messenger and Jesus, the message, will complete the works. Your servant and Believer in your Son Jesus, David Howard, September 13, 2015" UNQUOTE
Flowers sent in his Memory to the funeral service from his 69 Tiger's Teammates and also from his 68 Tiger teammates. Morris Sloan & Jim Crook from the 68 Tiger Team were there.
It is becoming quite apparent that as the days pass by, that the time remaining for the IHS class of 1970 is waning. I am sorely reminded to truly appreciate the ones your with - when you are with them. I also have come to understand that if they dont know Jesus, it should be your mission in life to get them to know him, so that you will be able to see them again anytime that you want throughout eternity.
David would like to see you again. So get yourself right with God, if you please.

I always stood in awe of David. I remember the time I had to go against David in a one on one tackling drill during two a days our Sr year in 1969. I weighed 129 lbs but lied and told the manager my weight was 140 for the game programs. Somehow I got David down on the drill without killing myself. The second week of the season, our #1 defense was scrimmaging against the scout team. Sophomore Tim Horner was the scout team QB. Someone (maybe David) hit him and knocked him for a loop. Coach Carter yelled, "Horner, get out out of there! You might get hurt! Stephens! Get in there!" As I ran into the huddle, I thought, "I guess I'm expendable." But I was glad to help the team. I do remember getting a concussion when David and Ron Tipton both hit me on a play up the middle. I couldn't remember the plays after that and just looked at the cards Coach Carter was holding up and went right or left. David with his talent and heart was the source of much of our success in those years. I am so glad David was a man of faith. We will see him again. - Rusty Stephens #27
