Betsy Mitchell (IHS 1969)

I have had a varied work career in Accouting from Potomac Electric Power Company in Washington, DC to CAO, Pioneer Kaserne, Hanau, Germany to TPS Freight Distributors in Irving, TX to Berryman Products in Arlington, TX and Oak Grove Memorial Gardens in Irving, TX. Then I switched to tech support and was such for South Grand Prairie High School in Grand Prairie, TX for ten years.

I have been active in the Christian leadership movements Walk to Emmaus and Chrysalis in their Dallas chapters.

I am currently unemployed due to ill health but hope to recover and return to the work force.

During my Freshman year in Coach Uhr's General Science class, he was making an electricity demonstration. He had me hold one end of a 4 foot florescent light tube. He applied enough electricity to the other end to light the tube but not harm me. However, he forgot to tell me I was going to receive a mild electric shock. As soon as I did, I dropped the light and it shattered. I was soooo embarrassed and Coach felt really bad that he neglected to tell me to expect the shock. He was especially nice to me for the rest of the year. Even allowing me to be late often as I had PE at the other end of the school the preceeding class period.

I moved to Irving the summer before my Freshman year. I moved from a school whose 1969 grad class had 48 members. That community school had grades 1-12 and had fewer students than our Freshman class. At that school, you knew everyone, their parents, brothers, sisters, aunts and uncles. If you did anything wrong, 3 people had called your mother to let her know before you got home.
I was a pretty lost puppy for the first 6-8 weeks at IHS, but soon found my niche and made many friends.

I lost contact with my IHS classmates while I was a military wife trotting around the country and then Europe. I have recently reconnected with some via FB and the IHSclassof69 website. From about 75-85, I specialized in converting manual accounting systems to computerized accounting. From 85-95, I specialized in converting stand-alone computerized accounting systems to networked accounting. From 95-05 I used my computer knowledge of the past to become a software support technician and I loved it. Accounting had become rather boring for me.

The men in my family have all served in the military. My dad, S.M.(IO) Mitchell, Jr served during WWII in New Guinea and later training new troops in the use of anti-aircraft weapons at Ft. Bliss, El Paso, TX.

My first husband, Danny was career Army and we moved 13 times during our 11 years of marriage (no wonder we divorced) and had three children, all boys. We were stationed at Ft Sam Houston, San Antonio, TX; Ft Sill, Lawton, OK; Ft Belvoir, VA (near DC); Camp Bullis, TX (near San Antonio); Pioneer Kaserne, Hanau, Germany; Ft Hood, Killeen, TX ; and Lowry AFB Army Detachment, Denver, CO.

My 2nd husband, Jim served in the Navy during Vietnam prior to our marriage. We had one child, a daughter.
