Carol & I didn’t know each other in high school. However, our paths crossed about 7 years later. She was an RN in surgery at Irving Community Hospital. After I was there about a year, the supervisor decided I wasn’t as good as I should be & was going to let me go. But she decided to give me another chance & let Carol take me under her wing. Carol helped me improve so much in 30 days, I got to keep my job. I never was a super nurse, but thanks to Carol’s help & understanding I did really well in several surgical specialities my 20 years in surgery & had so much more confidence. All that helped me in other types of nursing over the years & also to create an amazing position my last 7 years of my 42 years of nursing. After a few years at Irving Community, we each went in different directions. I got to visit with her several weeks before she died in 1998 & got to thank her. In her usual humility she said that all she did was just to bring out what was there. But I told her, yes, but you did take the time & concern to do that, for which I’ll always be grateful.
I remeber Carol Shook. I had her in some classes and she was a real sweet girl. I didn't know she became an RN. What a blessing she must have been to her patients. I am sorry to hear of her passing.
