Sitting next to Anna Thayer in many classes; talking to BOYS in the parking lot before school; dances ~~ those in the BK cafeteria, as well as the ones at the Southside and Riverside Women's Clubs and the Beach Coliseum; diving for the BK swim team my senior year; hijinks with Debbie Warren (you know what they are, Debbie); double dating with Flo and Ray; the music of the late '60's; Sr. Brendan (yes, I was a big fan); integrating the boys and girls our junior year; graduating ~~ I was so ready to get out into a larger world.
After college I worked in Tallahassee for a news syndicate that provided state government news for seven TV stations around Florida. That was followed by jobs as a political reporter and news anchor in a small city in Texas; Portland, Oregon; and Seattle, Washington. In Portland I took a break from the reportorial side of politics to be the press secretary and speech writer for the Mayor. Next was Denver where I worked for a Mayoral candidate. In 1992 I moved to Irvine, CA where I've worked occasionally as a public affairs consultant to non-profits. However, I've primarily been raising my children and volunteering in the schools and local charities since moving to CA. I met and married Glen during the Portland years. He is an engineer working in environmental services. As a family we are sporty, as well as fans of sports. We have season tickets to the LA Angels baseball team, attend college football games of my husband's alma mater, manage to get to the mountains for downhill and x-country skiing at least once a year (more often during the Denver years), and we are all runners and hikers. While I am nowhere near Susan Jones Wallis in accomplishments, I have run in several marathons. We are frequent visitors to the National Parks. One of my all-time favorite accomplishments was hiking to the top of Half Dome in Yosemite with my daughter Kate. I love living in the West. When I moved to Oregon in January 1976, I felt I'd finally come home. I am energized by the can-do, get-up-and-go spirit that permeates Westerners. On that note, I'd better get up and go walk the dog.
