Susan Skinner Thomas went home to be with the Lord on October 7, 2015. She is preceded in death by her mother, Violet Walters Skinner. Susan is survived by her husband, Lanny Samuel Thomas, her two children, Page Skinner Thomas and Brightman Samuel Thomas, and her father, Charles Brightman Skinner. She is also survived by three siblings: Charles Brightman Skinner, Jr. (Randie) of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida; Patty Skinner Campbell (Doug) of Highlands, NC; and Randall Thomas Skinner (Tracy) of Jacksonville, Florida. Born on April 15, 1952, in Jacksonville, Florida, Susan was a true southern lady and a Florida Farm Girl. She graduated from Wolfson High School (1970) before receiving her B.A. in Psychology from Agnes Scott College (1974) and her Master's Degree in Architecture from the Georgia Institute of Technology (1980). Susan married the love of her life, Lanny, on June 13th, 1975. After moving to Rome, Georgia, she continued to practice architecture and served in many capacities at First Presbyterian Church and Darlington School. Due to her passion for historic preservation, Susan spent many years restoring Greystone, her home and former residence of First Lady Ellen Louise Axson Wilson. She also served on the Rome Historic Preservation Commission, the Downtown Development Authority, and as the architect for the restoration of Chieftains Museum. Susan contributed much to the preservation and enhancement of the urban fabric of Rome. She collaborated on the design of the Urban Foyer on E. 3rd Ave., the City Auditorium plaza, and the new pedestrian bridge. Her deep appreciation for sense of place and landscape led her to become a Certified Arborist and serve on the Rome Tree Board. Susan's professional pursuits reflect her intense love for people and the community that they shared. Above all things, she saw every encounter as an opportunity to develop friendships and lift others up. Her love for people and culture also led her on adventures around the world, her husband and children in tow. Susan was a lifelong learner, with particular interest in history, music, art, literature, and design. She also enjoyed the outdoors and could often be found hunting in the woods, climbing trees, bush-hogging on her John Deere tractor, or driving down the fairways of her favorite golf courses. Susan will be remembered for her infectious energy, integrity, loyalty and joie de vivre. Her character and spirit demonstrated an unwavering faith in God and love for family. This legacy of strength, service and love endures in the lives of all she touched. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, October 14th at the First Presbyterian Church, 101 E. 3rd. Ave., Rome, Georgia 30161.
