"shalom" peace project! Posted Monday, August 9, 2010 12:26 PM Shalom mean Peace...in Hebrew. Yet relatively few of the residents of my adopted hometown of Salem, OR actually know that!Quite ironic. Salem's name was derived from SHALOM. We aren't at all like Salem, MA of witch hunt history. We've banned witches, whichever way. To call public attention to our Theme of Peace, we've formed a Peace Mural Council to help beautify our downtown business area. And best of all, we've found Lynn Takata, a mosaic muralist ready to lead a youth participation project to encourage kids to develop the actual design, hopefully in time for Independence Day 2011. We're discussing logistics with a teen coffeehouse. In other developments, we're on our way to create a puppet theatre with a distinct difference: teens would consult social agencies to do scriptwriting about relevant subjects of interest, like Bullying or Teen Pregnancy. OR is a highly progressive state. Do come visit us sometime soon. ~~BLC at luckycoyne@yahoo.com

RE: "shalom" peace project! Posted Friday, September 10, 2010 06:41 PM Great News greeted us today in Salem, OR. Our local YMCA approved becoming sponsor to Peace Mural to be designed in composite by our youth. Salem is derived from Shalom, meaning Peace. We want to not be confused with those witches from Salem, MA on the East Coast. We tend to use umbrellas rather than broomsticks. Also the tv show Extreme Makeover has chosen our OR School for the Deaf as its coming project. We hear you...loud and clear! ~BLC~T I |
