Save Jamaica High School – Jan. 7 2010 –
Dare to see WHY?

Hundreds showed up with passion from all arenas. Who came?
Parents, students, alumni, current and retired teachers, teachers from schools throughout Queens and Brooklyn, politicians - some of whom are graduates of Jamaica, as well as students from other high schools, and UFT chapter chairs from other schools, joined close to one thousand people in attendance at the hearing on January 7, to voice their concerns about the fate of Jamaica High School. A unanimous resolution was passed calling on the Department of Education to reverse the precipitous decision to close Jamaica High School.
We all feel that we should join forces - neighbors, community associations, alumni, our political associations, alumni (I graduated from Jamaica in 1972, and still have many friends from those high schools days).
For those of you who couldn't attend, these videos of the Rally and the Hearing will take you breath away if you believe in family, community, and the high educational standards Jamaica High School has represent for over a century. Jamaica High School has been the connecting tissue that makes Jamaica, New York a great and functional community. It's continued existence is vital for the health of Jamaica and is critical for all citizens and for all communities.

Council member Leroy Comrie told us to e-mail every day Joel Klein,jklein@nycboe.net and Mike Bloomberg at mbloomberg@Bloomberg.com and say that the people will not let them close Jamaica High School. That they cannot justify this action
