"Jamaica Farewell" as Reunion Theme Posted Saturday, January 16, 2010 12:51 AM Just thinking aloud, friends. Harry Bellafonte was in his Calypso heyday some 50 years ago when we were wet-behind-the-ears Jam High students. I recall how that and folk songs of that era carried the day. So why not have JAMAICA FAREWELL as our theme song for the Sept. 25th Reunion? Does anyone want to attempt clever new lyrics to the bongo beat? If there are no takers, maybe I'll stick out my neck and try. I recall 1960 as the year we transitioned to a "New Generation of Americans" when JFK was elected as our youngest president of that period to succeed a much older Ike Eisenhower...to the New Frontier and Camelot. Those were the days of transition. Our big issue at the UN Club: Should France grant independence to its N. African colonies of Morocco and Algeria? DeGaulle wondered if they were too weak to run their own affairs. History proved otherwise. So much for retrospect. ~Barry-Lee Coyne '59 -- (503) 365-7533 |
