I just wanted to inform you that Thomas Barry, Class of 1960, was a 2nd Lieutenant serving in South Vietnam. He was leading his company when he was killed on March 13, 1967. He was a friend and I attended his military funeral on Long Island. He was an excellent leader and all his men appreciated his leadership and caring manner.

I didn't know Thomas Barry. In retrospect, it was a terrible waste that a good man, who served in a high capcaity position, had to fall in what turned out to be an ill-advised project, doomed by history. I knew several other men who were lost in the quagmire of Vietnam. Two ROTC colleagues, a law school classmate, and a hugely talented officer I met while assigned to HQ, First Cavalry Division. I wasn't a combat leader, but all of us who came back in one piece were fortunate. Despite our losses, I am glad our nation didn't support continuation of the war til the last Vietnamese standing.
