Alan and I lived on 173rd St. in Fresh Meadows and we had the same friends and were in some of the same classes at both Ryan and Jamaica. What Alan was known for, before he was famous, was his wild and wonderful sense of humor. He was the funniest person I ever knew. Even to this day I remember his verbal talent and  intelligence. He was the center of attention in any gathering because of his wonderful personality. Alan chose to pursue band music and jazz rather than staying in Juliard and so for 50 years he breathed in tons of cigarette smoke. He died from lung cancer.

Bill Tannen (1960)

Alan and I hooked up at George Ryan and continued at Jamaica H.S.. He left tor Julliard and  became one of the great go to studio trumpet players in USA. His musical credits ranged from the famous solo "Spinning Wheel" for Blood Sweat and Tears to Sinatra, SNL, The Blues Brothers Band, and countless others.

Was he funny? In the industry his nickname was "Mr. Fabulous" and if you think I'm making this up please Google, IMdb.com or Youtube him. Alan took me to "his" Manhattan around 1962 to Birdland, The Metrople and Lenny Bruce. Many many years later we reunited at a music score session on a film I directed. We then went to the "Polish Tea Room" at the old Edison Hotel where we yadda yadded for hours.

One of a kind.

I didn't know Alan personally but always heard about him from Bill Tannen, who knows the music and film industry very well.  Sorry to learn of Rubin's death as he was unique in persuing his art, which is always risky.  Ave Atqua Vale.
