The Foundation

Established to secure more firmly the bonds of friendship, high ideals and goals reminiscent of the legay derived from attending Sumner High School, the Sumner High School Alumni Association, Inc. begn in 1984.  One of the most significant recommendations to come out of the Association's First National Convention in 1995, was the establishment of THE SUMNER HIGH SCHOOL EDUCATION FOUNDATION, INC.  

The Alumni Association established the Foundation to serve as the philanthropic arm of the Association.  The purpose of the NOT for profit, Sumner High School Education Foundation, Inc. is to receive grants, contributions and/or other donations from individuals, organizations, or other foundations in order to assist the Sumner High School Alumni Association, Inc. and other organizations in establishing tutorial programs or other education opportunities that will enhance the education of children and residents of Kansas City, Kansas. 

In 1997, the first board of Directors for the Foundation was selected and the Articles of Incorporation were filed with the State of Kansas.  Chair Frances Bradley Robinson, Vice-Chair Suzanne Thompson Knowles, Financial Secretary Alice Yates Banks, Corresponding Secretary Ilaine Collins Smith, Treasurer Robert D. Brady, Jr, members LaVert Murry, Elmer C. Jackson, III, and Richard McClain, assisted by Attorney Elmer C. Jackson, Jr. adopted the first bylaws.  The organization achieved 501(c)3 federal tax-exempt status in 1999 when Attorney Gayle Townsend joined the board.

Mike Rogers became board chair in 2010.  In 2018, Janet Rogers Morgan assumed the position as chair of the board. Current board members are Carla Eskridge, Alice Yates Banks, Robert D. Brady, Jr., Elmer C. Jackson, III, and Frances Bradley Robinson.
