Since graduating from Missouri State University, I've been in journalism most of my career -- corporate communications and business writing. It's still a passion.
Memories of high school? I barely remember yesterday, much less three decades ago. But crack open the yearbook and some gauzzy memories return -- some great, others harrowing.
Playing poker till the sun came up. Stronach and Cartwright walking into camp, dripping wet, after driving off a bridge.
First real drunk. And first real love. (Were they connected?)
Watching Harper scamper a zillion yards for a TD -- but it was called back for a penalty. Very next play he did it again.
Trying (in vain) to remind Stephanie Lord to put on her damn seatbelt before getting behind the wheel in drivers ed. We even whistled "Sweet Georgia Brown" from the backseat -- our secret reminder! No luck.
Running into the chemistry class 'shower' with Lisa Hough as a final-day prank, but the teacher had turned off the water, wise to our plan. The teacher laughed, and we laughed with her. It was a bonding thing all around.
Beating Harper to the first hurdle in one race. It was only one race and one hurdle, but it was my crowning athletic achievement.
I'm a single father now with two children. I hope they have half as much in high school as we did. But only half.
