Friday night venue

Hi all, I am a member of a federated club that owns their own building that is on the historic record for KC and is located at Campbell and Linwood. It has a ballroom that is 4000 sq feet and has a stage. I am proposing that I could underwrite the cost of the use of the building for the Friday night function and host a BYOB cocktail party. This way Mike's band could play and we could use it as a gathering point then disband to other venue's at individual preference. Let me know what you think. Kris Whitaker

I am trying to quickly get caught up on what's what w/ the various committees. Some weeks ago I spent time online and sent emails to those on the "online missing" list that I was able to find and I see at least a couple responded.

I will cross-post this reply also to the Sat event forum and other appropriate ones. Albeit not being familiar w/ the bldg Kris is offering, I think this is a hugely generous offer and "could" be the "main" event so as not to have two very similar events Fri/Sat. Maybe this space could serve as the Saturday night space?

Re: other space rentals, typically there are reduced rental rates for alum for wonderful spaces on University grounds, i.e. perhaps UMKC? Also the KC Public Library rents various halls from elegant to informal. Ditto for various museums from extremely expensive on down.

The hotel ballroom coupled w/ reduced room rates is of course a great idea and approached much like a wedding or bar mitzva in booking such deals. You might also contact the KC (or even Overland Park) Visitors and convention Bureau as they often can be of help.

Does anyone have contacts at some of the local theaters that might have space for receptions? I don't know capacity but the Folly Theater rents out, for example.

Keep in mind that those of you locals who hold memberships to various organizations with spaces might be sitting on a goldmine of a resource.

I love the Sunday brunch buffet idea. BTW, I will be trying to arrange a local book signing to coincide with the reunion weekend while I'm there, probably for Sunday afternoon, Thurs eve, or possibly even early Friday evening.

Just my five cents' worth of ideas from a distance.

Kris,

I thought Friday night was going to be in Brookside or Waldo?"The Well" in Waldo has a private upstairs we could probably use(next to The Sweet Guy"). Are you saying the Anthenaeum doesn't have a liquor license? I don't think our group would be interested in BYOB.

I am working on a couple places that are moderately priced that have plenty of room for Mike's band and dance floor and have cash bar. I will get back to the committee when I have all the facts for these venues for Sat. night.

Thanks for your input and your investigating!

Hi Connie, Thanks for your input. I am supposed to be on the committee (I signed up at the meeting at the Sweet Guy) and this is the first I have heard that the Friday night venue had been discussed let alone the area decided upon. It was just an offer that I will be glad to resend. Kris Whitaker

Hi Connie,

I know that Peggy said we were going to reach a decision on the Saturday venue by the end of March.  Well, April Fools is only a week away.  What do you think about scheduling a Committee Meeting so that people can make time to attend and proposals can be presented, people can get updates, etc.?  I don't know if you are aware that we have been approved by the Plaza Library for free meeting space (see my post re same)?

Hi, Kris,

There is a Friday night committee I believe. I don't know what they are doing, though. We'll have to wait and see???

Mandy,

Yes, I saw the Plaza Library as a possible meeting place. A little out of the way for those of us that live south. How about somewhere in Prairie Village for a change to meet? Wherever. -----I think Peggy is getting together a spreadsheet of possibilities that have been submitted. Yes, she wants to have a meeting in the next week or so. Waiting on a couple proposals of places to add to the list.

Thanks.

Connie

Hi Connie,

As long as you can find a place that is free and quiet so we can hear each other--and easily accessible to everyone.   Setting a time and day now would be good as people have other things to do, and I would hate for people to miss the meeting due to scheduling conflicts--I don't think a minimum one-week notice is an unreasonable request.  Your call.

Committee Members

I am checking with the Well to try and get the deck or their Private room reserved I will let you know.  We are doing Drink machines for them and I know the owners. I can Chair this if no one else will.  Let me know Beth.
