Stephen Patrick Goodwin died Wednesday, April 21, 2010, in Morgantown, W.Va., following a brief illness.
Goodwin was the third son born to Robert Booth Goodwin and Lessie Mae Staats Goodwin on May 23, 1947 in Ripley, W.Va. He graduated from Southwest High School in Kansas City, Mo., in 1965. He returned to West Virginia and graduated from West Virginia University in 1969 and the West Virginia University College of Law in 1972. He was a partner with Dinsmore & Shobl in Morgantown, after serving as a partner in his family law firm, Goodwin & Goodwin for more than 30 years, and operating his own law firm, Goodwin & Ware, Morgantown.
He was married May 11, 1971, to Ellen Carte Gibson in Ripley, W.Va. The couple raised their family in Mt. Alto, W.Va. and both were active volunteers at their children's schools of Cottageville Elementary, Ripley Middle School and Ripley High School.
An active volunteer and community member, Goodwin was integral in establishing a chapter of the American Heart Association in Ripley. He served on the West Virginia Board of Medicine, the WVU College of Law Visiting Committee as the 100th president of the WVU Alumni Association and a past chair of the West Virginia University Board of Governors. Goodwin was named a Distinguished West Virginian in 2003 and was named Outstanding Alumni by the West Virginia University Student Government Association in 2007.
Goodwin is survived by his wife, Ellen Gibson Goodwin; three children and their spouses, Alyssa Goodwin Gregg and husband, Patrick of Morgantown, Carte Patrick Goodwin and wife Rochelle of Charleston, W.Va.; and T. Ryan Goodwin II and wife Aimee of Pocahontas, Ill.; and his beloved three grandchildren, Wesley Patrick Goodwin, Stephen James Gregg and Addyson Carolina Goodwin. He anxiously awaited the birth of two more grandchildren this year. He is survived by his older brothers and their spouses, Joseph R. Goodwin and his wife Kathleen of Charleston, W.Va., and Thomas R. Goodwin and his wife, Kathryn of Evans, W.Va.; and three nieces; four nephews and 15 great-nieces and nephews, cousins and extended family. He is also survived by foster daughter Cheryl Carlson and her daughter Kelly Wilson of Dallas, Texas.
Goodwin was preceded in death by his parents and other family members including his adored cousin Margie Waugh.
Hours of visitation will take place today from 5-8 p.m. at the Waybright Funeral Home, 511 South Church Street, Ripley, W.Va. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Epworth United Methodist Church in Ripley.
The family requests that contributions be made to the WVU Alumni Association Loyalty Permanent Endowment Fund for the Stephen P. Goodwin Memorial Scholarship to benefit students from Jackson County, West Virginia (WVU Alumni Association LPPF, P.O. Box 4269, Morgantown, W.Va. 26504) or to the WVU Heart Institute (WVU Foundation/WVU Heart Institute, HSC Development Office, P.O. Box 9008, Morgantown, WV 26506).
