Marty was a friend of mine. He was one of the boys in the band, in fact, played oboe with me. He also played picalo when needed. He was also in Musicals with me. I'm sorry I missed him.
"Going up to the spirit in the sky;
That's where I'm gonna go when I die.
When I die and they lay me to rest,
I'm gonna go to the place that's the best."
Marty was my date to the first girl's dance I ever attended and he was the perfect gentleman! I'll never forget him. What a sweetheart and he taught me how to do the splits!
It made me very sad to read this. Marty was always such a good friend. I loved how genuine he was about himself and his feelings for others. We had a lot of fun hanging out during band. He took me to the drive-in movie in the snow (in May) for my 18th birthday.
I, too, was sad to learn that Marty passed away. I'll always remember him as the Artful Dodger in "Oliver," the 1972 musical at DHS. He was always fun to be around and loved to crack jokes!
I came to know Marty really well in Drama class. We had a lot of conversations about who he was, and his struggle to be himself. Marty was so grateful to people who showed him kindness. I ran into him somewhere about five years after graduation and he seemed more settled. My high school days were richer because he was my friend.
