ELM CREEK - Benjamin A. DeBaets, 70, of Elm Creek died Thursday, June 23, 2011, at his home.

No services are planned.

O'Brien-Straatmann Funeral Home of Kearney is in charge of arrangements.

He was born July 28, 1940, in Kearney to Arthur and Elizabeth (Eliker) DeBaets.

Survivors include his special friend, Connie Branham.

He grew up in and received his education in Kearney. He graduated from Kearney High School in 1958.

He joined the U.S. Navy on Feb. 25, 1959, and served until his discharge on Feb. 24, 1964. He received the Antarctic Service Medal and Bronze Clasp and the Good Conduct Medal.

After his discharge from the military, he was a self-employed over-the-road truck driver.

He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the National Rifle Association. He enjoyed fishing and hunting.

He was preceded in death by his son, Benjamin A. DeBaets II, and infant daughter, Cleta DeBaets.

I'm so sorry to hear about Ben - he was a "fun" guy.   He had a great sense of humor and will be missed.  There was no information regarding his death.  I hope he didn't suffer.

Ben was a fun and crazy guy in high school and still so at our class reunions.  I am sure he will be missed by his friends and family.

Jack Dyer

Sorry to read about Benny,  we met when his father was dealing with my step/father, an emplement dealer in about 1949. We all know Benny had his moments,but was always a lot fun to be around. Last time I spoke we him, he called me while on the road when my mother died. A long time , and good friend. Friends  will always remember him with good thoughts
