When Dick and I were ninth graders (1955) we were out for track and Mr. Keith Cottrell was our junior high coach . We were both trying to be sprinters and not making the grade so at the end of the season we were chosen to be on the freshman mile relay at the Grand Island Relays. What a thrill for ninth graders to ride on the varsity bus to G.I.. When we got there and our event was coming up, John Kearney, Dicks father, summoned us to the fence and said" boys it it is only one lap around for each of you Just run like the devil and you will do great" . We did and only got 3rd or 4th but what a thrill to be one of the "big Kearney High School boys , bus ride and all".
