Comments:

After 34 years in the Winston Salem Forsyth County School System it is great to be able to retire and enjoy a slower pace of life. I was fortunate to spend 25 years at our Alma Mater, teaching PE and coaching Football and Wrestling.
I was honored to be Inducted into the East Forsyth Athletic Hall of Fame in 2013. My years at East Forsyth as a student and as a teacher/coach was a dream come true.
In 2017 I was honored to be inducted into the Winston-Salem Forsyth County School System Hall of Fame. I was fortunate to teach and coach many great athletes and students

School Story:

I enjoyed my high school years enough that I decided that someday I might just return one day as a teacher and coach. That happened in 1978 and I spent the 25 years at East! It was a rewarding experience and a perfect career for me. As years passed I even taught children of classmates that I had graduated with in 1970. I retired in 2007 and have gotten used to sleeping late whenever I am not making deliveries as a part time courier.

Grandchildren:

I have 2 grandsons
Joseph W Ellender 5th. Age 4
Walker Brooks Ellender. Age 2

Siblings or cousins (or your spouse and/or brother/sistes in-law that attended EFHS? (provide names & year they graduated)

David D Ellender (class of 1971) brother

Sons also graduated from East Forsyth
Joe 4th....... 2003
James W......2005
Jeremy W.....2006

Places I have lived

Besides Kernersville and Winston Salem the only other place that I have lived is in Boone during my four years at Appalachian.

Do you have an unusual job - and if so - tell us about it. (ie. an alumni from another class is a medical illustrator - yep - they draw pics of diseases for text books)

After retirement I started a courier business. I delivery computer parts and Home Medical Supplies to shut-ins and patients recently discharged from the hospital.
Presently I am driving a Sprinter van delivering industrial supplies. I have enjoyed the change in positions.

Have you attended past reunions? If so - any comments?

I have attended all the reunions and enjoy them immensely. The Reunion Committee does and excellent job of planning and arranging a memorable event. I hope the 50th coming up in a couple of years will be the best yet.

The 50th Reunion has been postponed due to the virus but will hopefully occur in September of 2021.

Sammy was such a pleasant person.  I enjoyed his friendship and competing along side him on the football field.  I consider myself lucky to be a friend and teammate at East Forsyth.  Praise Be To God for his Life and impact that he had on others.

I attended Tim's funeral in Troy NC.  He was a faithful member of his church and sang in the choir.  I had forgotten that he was a Madrical at East Forsyth.  I remember his love for music and he constantly hummed and sang.  During his funeral service there were two vocalist that sang several songs and after the eulogy the pastor announced that now we would have some special music.  Not being from the area I knew no one at the service not even Tim's wife, Vera so when the recording began to play I recognized the song as "Jesus is the Lighthouse", which is my favorite spiritual song.  I did not recognize the artist singing the song until I saw the organist and several members of the congregation in tears.  At that moment, I realize the singer was no other that our friend, Tim Kimble.  What a moment at a Celebration of Life for a wonderful person who I am proud to call a lifelong friend.  After the service I was able to meet Vera and several members of the family and wish her and the family our blessings.  God is Good.   He was a faithful man who was a great husband and father.

It is great fun to reminisce at our reunions about our East Forsyth days. I spent 25 years teaching and coaching at East after graduation and the memories are so rewarding. I hope that everyone had a career and enjoyed it as much as I was able to.....

Tim was a great lifelong friend and teammate. We were room mates our Junior year at Appalachian but I moved home my Senior year to do Student Teaching.  A person could not ask for a better friend than Tim.  I visited him at The Correctional Institute at Troy.  I could not imagine him choosing that as a career because he was such a gentle soul.   The women of the prison as we walked the halls would greet him.  It was an experience I will always remember.  My condolences to the family because I know how much he was loved and revered by his family and friends. God Bless his Life and the memories that we share.
