Simon Cridland

After sixth form I studied science for a year at UWI then studied geology at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada. After graduation in 1987, I spent a year working for a magazine in Cayman as a DJ at Radio Cayman. I returned to Canada to study law at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. I was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1993. I worked in private practice for a few years in Toronto and, in 1997, moved to Ottawa to join the Canadian Foreign Service. I have been posted to Colombia, Cuba, India and Spain, where I headed the political section of the Embassy of Canada in Madrid. I returned to Ottawa, Canada in August 2017, where I am now heading the Oceans Law Section at Global Affairs Canada. Looking forward to reconnecting with a bunch of great guys and making a real contribution to the Wolmer's family.

Those days of two-cent bus fares, 25-cent bread and cheese, Archie and Commando comics, Six Million Dollar Man and Charlie's Angels seem so long ago -- and yet at times they seem like almost yesterday.

I used to love Manning Cup matches at the National Stadium, and arguably became one of Wolmer's loudest and craziest fans. A few fans of a certain other high school, which had just lost a match, did not appreciate my unapologetic fervour. They surrounded me after the match and were about to make my life very unpleasant. To my relief, they suddenly backed off and let me go. They were wearing purple and white ties, which seemed appropriate as purple is the colour of mourning.

A few guys have asked me if I remember the fictitious country from second form. Of course I do. However, we can talk about that one at the next reunion.
