Robert D. Haslach
Robert Dittmar Haslach died at his home in Washington, DC on October 27, 2015, at the age of 69, of prostate cancer. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Linda Allison Haslach; daughters, Reed Haslach Humphery and Robin Haslach Snellgrove; son, John B. Haslach; brothers Henry W. Haslach and Frederick Stephen Haslach; three grandchildren, two sons-in-law, and many nieces and nephews.
Robert was the son of the late Henry W. Haslach and Kathryn D. Haslach of Chapel Hill. He graduated from Dartmouth College, class of 1968, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Classics, and completed a Master of Arts degree at the University of Chicago in 1969. During his lifetime, Robert's talent in languages and communications led him in his career to radio broadcasting, communications work for the Netherlands Embassy in the 1980s, and later international aid work mainly in the Francophone region of Africa. He authored books and later in life was a translator in Dutch and French. In recent years Robert nurtured a lifelong interest and love of drawing, and became a dedicated artist specializing in works on paper.
A funeral service celebrating Robert's life will be held at St. Columba's Episcopal Church at 1 p.m. on Saturday, November 7, 2015. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Columba's Church, with the notation of "In Thanksgiving for the Life of Robert Haslach." Donations will be used to establish a fund for young adult ministries.

That is so sad! It was wonderful to see Bob at the reunion last year, and we were in touch about drawing and writing last fall. Looked forward to seeing him at the 55th reunion.......

So sorry for Bob's passing! He was someone who I had great respect for in high school though he never demanded it. Always ready for an investigation or debate but his humor was just as evident. I didn't realize his talent for drawing was as developed as I found it to be from our last reunion. I loved his drawings!

I am so sad to hear about Bob's passing. We were friends in high school, and his wife, Linda Allison, and I were best friends in junior high and our early years in high school. I was quite shocked to hear this news and was also looking forward to seeing both Bob and Linda at our 55th. Bob and I used to enjoy reading Mad Magazine during Enlgish Lit. We had it hidden in our text book. I will be praying for the family.

Bob's death is a time for mourning and for celebration of an Incredibly Nice Guy. When I sent him birthday greets this past year, referencing our scouting days together, he responded "Hey Mike! - yes - the Iggle Scouts of Troop 46 - that legacy has lasted longer than any of my "professional" work."
He was referring to his achievement as Eagle Scout...a high honor in Boy Scout days. We shared many hours together as Boy Scouts...then later as Explorer Scouts in high school. One golden memory is from August of 1961. We were part of a mixed group of scouts from various North Shore troops that traveled to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico for an outdoor adventure. On our first night there, a number of us from various communities talked late into the night about God and religion...comparing views from the various Christian and Jewish denominations represented in the circle. That was probably the first theosophical debate for many of us.
It was such a pleasure to visit with Bob at the reunion. Condolences to Linda and to everyone who was touched by Bob Haslach's positive energies. May the warmth of your memories help soften the sharp edges of your grief.
