William Conway, Science. Born 1933, Died May 15, 2003.
To have his physics students at Lake Forest High School measure speed, William K. Conway had them drop eggs out of the third floor classroom window; he also encouraged a ride on a roller coaster to understand how motion can affect speed.
Mr. Conway, 70, of Lake Forest, who taught physics for 38 years at the high school, died Thursday, May 15, of cancer in Westmoreland Nursing Home, Lake Forest.
His colleagues say Mr. Conway intrigued his students into wanting to learn about physics, the science devoted to the study of matter and energy.
"Bill was known for his unique and dramatic demonstrations," said Jill Bruder, the school's director of human resources.
"He was innovative, creative and pushed the envelope every way possible to make learning physics very positive for our students, and because of his unique teaching methods and his passion for the subject, kids were drawn to him."
Born and raised in Marshfield, Wis., Mr. Conway was drawn to physics at a young age, his wife, Gloria, said.
"Bill always enjoyed learning how things worked," she added. "He grew up with a father who could fix everything, so he learned a lot at home and loved that physics was behind the operation of any appliance, as well as the bounce of a baseball."
Mr. Conway met his wife when both were students at the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point.
He played the clarinet and saxophone in the school band and chorus; she played the piano and violin.
He was drafted into the U.S. Army a year after he graduated in 1955, spending most of his two years in the service in the 324th Army Band in Aberdeen, Md. The couple married in 1956.
Mr. Conway earned master's degrees in science and education from the University of Wisconsin in 1960, and took graduate classes in physics at the Illinois Institute of Technology, the University of Minnesota and the University of Wisconsin at Madison, where he earned a doctorate in physics in 1976.
Like his father, Mr. Conway enjoyed fixing things around the house, his wife said, but his passion was teaching physics. "I think he was a wonderful teacher," his wife said. "He loved explaining things and working with children. Not only could he fix everything, he could explain how machinery and all kinds of things worked."
Mr. Conway continuously worked to improve his teaching to help students understand the science he loved, said Jay Hoffman, the school's principal.
"He liaisoned with different physics groups to get the most current and best methods to teach physics," Hoffman said. "He always was on the cutting edge of using new ways of looking at a particular concept or introducing new laboratory work to keep the kids interested and bring science to life."
Other survivors include his sons, Brian and John; a daughter, Carol Moore; and seven grandchildren. (Barbara Sherlock, Chicago Tribune, May 21, 2003.)

Frank H. Townsend, English. Born Feb 12, 1917. Died Nov 11, 2005.
Longtime educator at Lake Forest High School
Dr. Frank Herrick Townsend was a fixture in Lake Bluff for more than 50 years, but his colorful life was shaded in many ways by his service in the Navy.
"He had a lot of passions - music, golf, gardening ... but in reading some of his memoirs, he felt that his service was very important in shaping his life," said his son, Jim. On the day Dr. Townsend died, one of his final acts was honoring that experience.
Dr. Townsend, 88, died of a heart attach Friday, Nov. 11, at Highland Park Hospital, just hours after attending a Veterans Day memorial service in Lake Bluff.
A native of Proctor, Vt., Dr. Townsend arrived in Illinois in 1939, when he accepted a teaching position at the Todd School for Boys in Woodstock.
Dr. Townsend, a graduate of Williams College in Massachusetts, spent two years teaching in Woodstock before the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941.
At that point, Dr. Townsend decided to enlist in the Navy Officers Training Program, his son said.
He went on to serve as a first lieutenant and later as executive officer of the USS Bebas, a submarine chaser in the Paciific Ocean, until the ship was decommissioned at the end of the way in 1945.
After WWII, Dr. Townsend moved back to Illinois, where he completed his master's degree in English at the University of Chicago and then taught at Augustana College in Rock Islad for two years.
In 1949, Dr. Townsend returned to the U. of C., where he meant his wife, Lola, and completed his doctoral degree in 1951. Mrs. Towsend died in June at age 89.
Upon receiving his doctoral degree, Dr. Townsend joined the faculty of Lake Forest High School as chairman of the English department and taught at the north suburban school until his retirement in 1977.
"He touched the lives of countless students in positive and memorable ways," said his daughter Jane Greene.
During his career, Dr. Townsend worked closely with the College Board and Educational Testing SErvice to inplement and refine its Advance Placement English examination program.
He was also an accomplished violinist and became a charter member of the Lake Forest Symphony in 1955.
Dr. Townsend wrote local history articles for the town's Fourth of July parade program every year. He also played a key role in establishing the Vliet Center for Lake Bluff History, his daughter said.
Other survivors include another daughter, Mary Grayson; and four granddaughters.
A memorial service for Dr. Townsend will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Grace United Methodist Church in lake Bluff. dwischnowsky@tribune.com (Chicago Tribune, Nov 27, 2005.)
