I've been and out of universities, alternating between getting degrees and using them in industry. I got a zoology degree at U. Florida but couldn't immediately get a biology-related job, so I worked in photography first. Then I did a lab tech stint, then a research assistant gig. I got married to Diane in 1984, and she got a better-paying job in Texas, so we went there. I entered a computer science program there and got my MSCS in 1989. I worked as a programmer from 1989 to 1993. Diane and I both went back to grad school in wildlife and fisheries sciences at Texas A&M in 1993, and we studied marine mammal bioacoustics. I had been interested in the creation/evolution policy controversy for a long time, and took a job at the National Center for Science Education in 2003. I was part of the group there that consulted with the plaintiffs' attorneys in the 2005 Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District case in Pennsylvania. In 2007, I took a postdoc position at Michigan State University, using evolutionary computation to explore the evolution of intelligent behavior. In 2009, I took a job with the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute in St. Petersburg, Florida.
Diane and I are master falconers. We each have a Harris' hawk on our permits. We also have a Vizsla pointing dog and have a mini-Dachshund to help flush out rabbits that have gone to ground.
We bought a house in Palmetto, FL in Feb. 2010 that's a bit of a fixer-upper, but on 7 acres of land.
