School Story:

I have MANY childhood memories, giggling with Kathy Bosco, Liz White, and Sarah Davidson at sleepover parties and freezing someone's bra every time (she shall remain nameless) - dancing through the hallways with Patty Hannah, screaming at the top of my lungs with Margaret Rielly on the stands at football games - going to the dance hops and worrying about what to wear (which is really funny considering our taste back then), singing in the Melodaires with Mr Maher and wanting to die every time he gave me a solo - singing in the chorus and aiming spitballs at the guys - being in "No, No, A Thousand Times No" and having to walk across the stage with placards that read "boo hiss", etc in a little hot pink mini skirt - wearing those HUGE bloomer gym short outfits and hating it - going to upper classmen proms and dances (had fun with Gerald Fried at one, Maris Kristbergs at another) - laughing with Barbara Engles in History Class and creating an hysterical history oriented newspaper together to butter up the teacher and getting an A (headline was Rome is burning) - arguing with an english teacher who gave me a D on an excellent paper written about Edgar Allen Poe (she didn't like that I included his escapades with his 11 year old niece and his use of drugs) so I brought my "D" report to Mr Mayer who read it and he instructed the teacher to change my grade to an A (I LOVED that) - getting sent home by Mr Mayer from student government day for wearing the coolots I made in home ec (inappropriate attire back then) -being fascinated by the girls who could tease their hair higher then imaginable - getting detention for skipping a class - having a crush a week and having the "crush" sit at the lunch table with all us gals to see if he was crush worthy - how hard the gym floor was while performing modern dance and having to flop to your knees (that still hurts) - getting rope burn from climbing to the ceiling of the gym and trying to get down - being the unofficial cheerleaders for the baseball teams - going to the Hallabaloo and singing White Rabbit with the Six Pack - sitting on my front stoop at the end of the school day, almost every day with my neighbor Paul Benn (and sometimes Don Vandenberg) and discussing what happened that day and dealing with our teenage angst.

A tremendous sadness learning of the passing of Steven on my birthday! The heartache is still overwhelming as is the shock of his passing so quickly, leaving behind the love of his life, Rose, and his beautiful daughters and grandchildren. Steven was cut from a special cloth. One of the most caring, honest, and devoted men I have ever known. He was a man of his word and a well of deep compassion for his family and friends. He will always be missed and remembered.

Dominick was one of the nicest guys before highschool and in high school. He had a very sweet demeanor and loved to laugh so many laughs were shared over the years and lots of gags. His passing was both a shock and a loss to our class. I will always remember him as a super nice guy.

George was both my neighbor and my friend. He lived on Cherry Street next to Ocean County Park and we lived on the North Oakland Street which was the next street off Route 88 going toward downtown Lakewood. One summer George, Margarete Munoz (we called her Geet) and I hung out quite often because we got detention for skipping school a number of times and had to attend summer school. We attended the minimum of classes to pass because we cut many summer school classes too. But we got through it and had a wonderful time building memories of many sun and fun days filled with our laughter. It broke my heart to learn of George's passing. His brother, Steve, who was a close friend of my brother's Jan and Lance Hartman, had passed about ten years before we lost George, so it was a very sad for us to lose George too. A good friend and neighbor.

I remember being very shocked and very upset when we, the world, lost Patricia. She was a truly lovely person who, like the rest of us, was muddeling through growing pains. I knew she was hurt by very unkind things that were said to her, about her and had seen her being bullied. I thought we all were experiencing that and had to just deal...ending everything permanantly never entered my mind. I remember crying for Patricia and being very angry at her bullies...funny how you never forget and always view people in a certain way based on what they present to you. Patricia will always be remembered as a very sweet and smart girl who made a loyal friend and could make you laugh in spite of her inner pain.
