SKY IS THE LIMIT

Blindness, it is not the end of the world. It is just the beginning of my life. Blindness is part of my characteristic, but not who I am.

Losing my sight at the age of 24 because of diabetes, I thought my life was over. Being a very active person in life trying everything I could such as sports, hunting, water skiing, and other adventure things to get the best out of life that I could. I thought I was not going to be able to do those things anymore.

When I first became blind, all I did was sit around until the Commission for the Blind got in contact with me. Then, I found out about the Orientation Center in Alamorgordo, so, I decided to give it a chance.

As soon as I got here the staff at the center started to open my eyes on all the things that I could still do. The training at the center was very intense and it gave me the confidence, and the skills that I needed to succeed in life.

Being blind has not gotten in the way of my goals and objectives in life because now that I have the skills that I need I am going to go back to college and get my degree and become successful at what I do. I now am not afraid to try anything because I know that if I set my mind to it nothing is impossible and the sky is the limit. I am now doing the same things that I was doing before I lost my sight and I am even enjoying them more. Before I was told that lind people could not do anything, but after going to the center, I know that is nto the case and I will be successful at whatever I do.

So, my philosophy on blindness is that with a positive attitude there is no stopping me and the sky is the limit.

Richard "Cube" Yara was one of the funniest, kindest, bravest, and open hearted persons I knew. He will forever be missed. He always reminds you of how precious life is and how you should always make everyday count!
