Didja Know?...Trivia

Many of us had the privilege of choosing our mascot and school colors.   An assembly of students who would be attending EHS was held at Ed Von Tobel Jr. High  in May, 1973 (and probably at other sites with students who would be opening the school.)  The name of the school was already decided...Eldorado High School.  The first choice for mascot and school colors , which ran a very close second, was The Gold Miners (if I remember correctly) with brown and gold as the colors.  Someone came up with Sundevils as another option and the colors were chosen to match those of Arizona State University...Home of the Sundevils.  We also had the opportunity later to name our newspaper (The Sundevil Advocate), the yearbook (The Sunburst), the drill team (The Goldusters ), along with other teams and organizations.  We chose the Alma Mater (does someone have the words to it?--See below...Jerri Ann Barr Holdaway sent in the words for us.), fight song, and other slogans for the school.  Does anyone know if any of these are still being used???

Many have asked me about the Class of 74; in fact, a few have even challenged me saying that it never existed.  Well they were our first grads and deserve to be recognized....There were only a few of them who graduated as Juniors in 1974.  They walked at the Rancho High School graduation ceremony, but they wore maroon and gold gowns and received Eldorado diplomas from our principal.  I know that Kwan McComas was one, but don't know the others for sure.  I believe that one was Vickie (???)  If you know more about this, fill us all in.  But the important thing is to know that they WERE the first grads.  Sorry, Class of 75!

The Class of 78 will be the only class to attend EHS for 5 years!  Since we had no Seniors the first year, they decided to utilize the class space and had 8th Graders attend the High School.

Miss Daniels, our typing teacher, came with us from Ed Von Tobel Jr. High where she taught SCIENCEMr. Montoya taught ENGLISH at Von Tobel also instead of History.

I found the following on the 1978 commencement program.

Class Flower: Black Rose (a very special flower in honor of a very special fifth year graduating class.)

Class colors: Blue & White

Class motto: "Speak not of what you've done or are going to do; but do it and let it speak for itself."

Alma Mater:

Where the bold Sundevils
raise their arms on high
asking strength
for brave tomorrows
from the sky.

Where at Sunrise Mountain
our hopes and dreams arise

Here we hail thee,
Alma Mater
Eldorado High.
