The Great Race Posted Friday, September 4, 2009 12:44 AM During my senior year, there was almost nowhere nearby to go for lunch. I think we were still even a closed campus, actually. But many days, two carloads of us revved our engines and raced to the finish line--Laviccio's (I think that's the name.) Margaret Ontiveros and I were in my car. Rodger Schell and Sam White were in theirs. Just as the bell rang, we would bust out of Mr. Misenor's physic's class and then zoom across the desert. (We didn't have time in our half-hour lunch period to go around on the streets anyway.) What was our trophy? A maple bar! For some reason, the store only got one or two of these donuts each day. We even asked them to order more and they said that the orders came in from somewhere preset and couldn't be changed. So the race was on.... Once in a blue moon, we would splurge and actually buy a sandwich. I saved most of my lunch money for Friday night at Pizza Inn after the game. Rodger and Sam, wanna do lunch??? Maybe some donut shop has 4! |

RE: The Great Race Posted Tuesday, September 15, 2009 11:24 AM I do remember feeling that there was no place to go out for lunch. Eldorado was pretty far away from any kind of fast food restaurants. I spent most of my lunches in the cafeteria listening to the juke box play Marvin Gaye, "Let,s get it on" again and again. Does anyone else remember this?

RE: The Great Race Posted Friday, November 20, 2009 08:23 PM You bet I remember the juke box! Remember when dance tunes came on, so many crowded the stage to dance? How cool was that? The Isley Brothers "Who's that Lady" and the song "Keep in truckin". For mid 70's, that school was cool. |

RE: The Great Race Posted Thursday, December 10, 2009 12:47 PM The jukebox was great. I remember always hearing If you want me to stay by Sly & the family Stone & Frankenstein by Edgar Winter. I used to get maple bars at the cafetiria, no need to rush out any where! |

RE: The Great Race Posted Tuesday, January 12, 2010 12:58 AM That jukebox in the cafeteria brings back memories. The first year it was there, it had Fleetwood Mac (Sarah??), and the one I'll remember the most is Rocky Mountain Way, by Barnstorm (Joe Walsh, before he did the rest). One lunchtime it was playing, and there was a Tom (??SOMEONE??) dancing to it, in his own world. We all stopped and just watched. It was just one of those moments that freezes its image into your brain. Do you remember that green muck, the insta-grass that was all over the first month the school was open? I thought it was just some trick, and then it actually grew into grass. There are just so many memories... *sigh* |

RE: The Great Race Posted Thursday, September 4, 2014 04:26 AM Yes, I remember Tom BLACKMAN (or was it BLACKWELL?) playing Rocky Mountain Way as if the Jukebox was a keyboard. Quite the showman. I think he was also one of the students that rode a horse to school. |
