Don Helm

Don Helm

Don died 05/27/14 after his valiant struggle with pancreatic cancer. Don was a Las Vegas native. He was an active sportsman, athlete and hunter.  He played basketball for Brigham Young University and later for (what was then) Nevada Southern University, where he was a member of the first basketball team when the school was re-named the University of Nevada Las Vegas. He served in the U.S. Army. An avid scouter, he achieved his Silver Beaver award in 2006. He was a retiree of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, the Las Vegas Taxi Cab Authority and, most recently, as security for the Las Vegas Nevada LDS Temple.  Don taught hunter safety for the Nevada Department of Wildlife for over 40 years, was an instructor for CCW classes and a trained Boy Scout leader. Don and his wife (Nancy Empey, class of 1958) had three children, 12 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Don and I attended Paradise Valley Elementary together and were best buddies in the Boy Scouts.  We spent many hours together and camped out in the desert together.  We played a steel guitar duet at our 8th grade graduation ceremony.  I feel fortunate to have such a fine individual.
