Greetings,
In this time of Covid I hope that all of you are doing well and not going too crazy staying at home.
As you may know our President, Paul Baldasare, retired at the end of May. Paul began his service to St. Andrews as a student body President and ended it with the University's only alumni President in its history. Paul's legacy emerged through his steadfast commitment to the educational mission and values embedded in every alumnus. Paul was a quintessential servant leader who lead through his quiet example, patience, and unwavering devotion.
To honor his service that alumni council unanimously voted to establish the Paul Baldasare Presidential Scholarship as a permanently endowed scholarship. To endow this scholarship we need $50,000 to make it a reality. Your contribution to help create this scholarship would be greatly appreciated. You can mail a check or contribute on line. Be sure you indicate it is for the Paul Baldasare Presidential Scholarship.

Paul is retiring as our president. The first president who is the alumni who refused to allow our college to cease to exist and rallied so many to share the vision. He would say he didn’t do it alone and he didn’t. However, we could not have done it without him. He was in the place by the grace of God when we needed him.
I have just come from the latest alumni meeting. What is next for this institution? First, here is what is going good today.
1. St.Andrews has been operating with a balanced budget for the last three consecutive years. This has allowed us to expand course
offerings and new majors. Sports Performance,Health and Wellness, Health Services Administration are two new majors and we are working to gain approval for a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a Occupational Therapy Assistant. These will bring potentially 200 new students to campus who would’ve had to enroll in another university who had a BSN and OTA program.
2. 160 students enrolled in our online degree program-mostly adults!
3. Ten new faculty were added this fall. Ten new, student focused, engaged faculty. You know-our kind of people. They are here for the students to help them think critically, communicate effectively and become the leaders in their fields and communities that our world needs.
4. And what about this community of students? They are amazing. After Hurricane Florence, every single one of them came back. Every.one. They have flourished despite our campus STILL (like so much of Eastern NC) being under construction due to the turtle like pace of dealing with FEMA and flood damage.
5. The SGA is in the process of renovating Farago to be more of a student union type space (upstairs at the Belk Center is still being used for dining).
6. The SGA are starting/restarting interest and advocacy groups like Black Student Union,Student Athletic Advisory Council and also beginning a beautiful mentorship program with Carver Middle School. They are St.Andrews 2.0 (or 3.0 or 4.0 depending on how long ago we graduated)!
Therefore, Paul leaves us at an opportune time for a new president to come and lead us. As always, there is work to do! But the spirit of St.Andrews,of Flora MacDonald, and of Presbyterian Junior College which all grew and changed with each class that entered and graduated is alive and well. We can have faith that those who are coming after us there very much are this new century’s version of us. You will like them-come home and meet them this year in April at Alumni Weekend because #Everyyearisyouryear . Come see the work to be done on campus and you will be inspired to give as you listen to the amazing bands at #SaulFest2020. And come be inspired as you see us all take #standrewsforward. As always, sending all of you so much love,
I have also have to give credit to Susie Evans, head of alumni council communications committee, and other alumni who helped me compose this.
Also I wanted to report that as of Oct. the Class of 67 Scholarship is at $65,757 and growing as other money has come in since then. Keep up the good work.
I also want to thank Bonnie Greer Johnson and Pal Pruitt for being at council this time representing our class.

Greetings all,
We had Alumni Council meeting this past weekend. We began with a tour of the campus so that we could see the damage first hand. The entire bottom floor of the Morgan science building has been emptied and the drywall removed 3-4 feet from the floor. The new step is asbestos abatement. The library lost about 2,000 books due to a window on the third floor being blown out . The window is fixed now. The Vardell Bldg. had just had a new roof put on earlier this year so only had damage where the caulking failed. The Bell Tower has the top cement blocks come down. All of the top 2 tiers will need to be recast for replacement. The Belk Center ground floor is empty. With the help of an architect will be reconfigured for better usage and then be put back. It will take time.
St Andrews is still there and hard at work recruiting, retaining and repairing. To date the university is on target for the incoming freshman class to be the largest in a while. They are looking at expanding 2 new majors and adding a BS in nursing in the next few years. The university is working hard to retain the current students through more networking both on and off campus. The repairs are getting underway working with insurance, FEMA, and other organizations to obtain funding. It will take some time. Classes are back in full session.
Alumni weekend is April 12 and 13. It is our 52nd year. We would love to see you all on campus during that time.
Alumni Council will meet next on Feb 8 and 9. If you would be interested in serving on the council please contact me.
Have a blessed day and a wonderful Christmas.
