Laverne High School
Class Of 1978

Class History
THe halls of LHS have never seen such perfection as they did in the spring of 1965 when 48 little monsters converged on two lucky teachers, Mrs Kilmer and Mrs Laura Hoch. The monsters were;
Brent Bayliff Bonnie Batman
Kimmie Burkitt Steve Berry
Brett Bolin Terri Burch
Tammy Bozarth Sandra Buss
Joyce Farris Clinton Carlton
Tim Folkerts Pamela Cornell
Phillip Glover Tammy Crooks
Raymond Harvey Tina England
Sherry Hoch Teddy Folkerts
Larry Howard Jamie Hamilton
Lash Macca Penny Hawk
Katrina Meyer Randal Hill
Angela Moore Gregory Hurley
David Mulbery Joann Jacobs
Bradley Nave Johnny Johnson
Kerry Patterson Debra Judd
Donna Plain Donice Koch
Sharlene Shuman Barry Lotspeich
Rena Stinson Douglas Love
Kevin Walcher Janean Love
David Ward Herbert Mahan
Lisa Wolf Pamela Pepper
Barbara Swallow Michael Ward
Everyone was anxious to enter The World of Knowledge except Kevin Walcher, who the first day of school stormed out of the classroom screaming and hid behind a local playground tree. When Mrs Kilmer confronted Kevin about the situation, he declared,"I don't know the ABC's,I don't like it here, and I'm going back to Mooreland." Later Kevin was introduced to the "Board of Education" for his efforts to avoid class. By the way Kevin,we are glad that you found something to keep you interested in staying in LHS. Brent Bayliff and Kimmie Burkitt were picked to serve as crown bearers for the football queen crowning.
In second grade we lost Terri Burch,Clinton Carlton,Joyce Farris,Tim Folkerts,Teddy Folkerts,Penny Hawk,Johnny Johnson,Larry Patterson and Pamela Pepper. We gained Jimmy Bickell,Audrey Peterman,Devery Youngblood,David Jean,Mark Love,Chris Stinson, and Barbara Prather. Our teachers were Mrs Carol Hoch and Mrs Hardison. This was the year of the measle epidemic. During Laverne's episode, our class had only 8 pupils instead of 46,so the teachers enjoyed a quiet day!
The first day Devery Youngblood attended school, Barry Lotspeich and Greg Hurley welcomed him by dropping several hundred BB's in the back of the room. Devery has now perfected the art and is known as one of LHS's top BB rollers: To what do you owe your success Devery?
Third grade brought Teri Casey,Johnny Johnson,Gina Postoak,Gene Meyer,Vickie Pritchett and Rita Ross into our ranks. We lost Jimmy Bickell, Dana Davis, Randy Hill, Donna Plain and David Ward. Our teachers were Mrs Mudd and Mrs Cook.
This year the boys invented a new brand of ornriness when Lon Harvey, Barry Lotspeich and Greg Hurley locked Johnny Johnson out of the "little boys room". They realized later just how bad Johnny had to go when he left a trail all the way back to class. By the way, what punishment did you boys recieve?
Cupid finally made his debut and started many little "puppy love romances". By the way Kim and Barry, is it still "puppy love?'
Also this was the year Larry Howard was caught red handed as he crawled from desk to desk gathering answers for his English test.
There was much excitement in the class because we finally progressed into the high school. Although we were only in Junior High we felt pretty big. In Mr Pile's math class the boys threw a Christmas Party and gave Mr Pile a box of cow chips. By the way,how were grades in that class boys?
This is the year that Johnny Feese acquired the habit of taking his boots off in class. Johnny began screaming madly when Kevin Walcher and Willie Seale hid his boots. With the gestures, Johnny earned a trip to Mr Merritts office, screaming, "I want my boots, gimme my boots."
Our seventh grade year, we gained Herb Foutch,Norma Helfenbein, Mary Holcomb, Curt Janko, Tony Lenz, Cindy Birkle, Trina Meyer, Scott Johnson and Vickie Helton. No one left us.
The girls P.E. class has a close call in the locker when Jamie Hamilton's deoderant can became overheated and exploded under the pressure, thus spraying a thin layer of Right Guard over the entire bunch.
During the eighth grade we lost Curt Janko, Cindy Birkle, Rena Stinson and Vickie Helton. But in turn we gained Roy Alcorn, Sandra Furgason, Della Holder, Mark Miller, Patti Morris, Verlin Mees and Susan LaCompte.
As we were introduced to many new areas of learning we were also introduced to many new forms of amusement, mainly the spitwad. The boys math class spent many hours perfecting their throwing techniques on Mrs Graves' clock. This went on until Mrs Graves employed Mr Laverty's hard swinging ability to deal out punishment for such acts. Spitwad throwing became a thing of the past.
The girls also got into the act when they mixed several brands of perfume and poured it down the air vents in Mrs Graves' room. Mrs Graves never could figure out where that "peculiar odor" was coming from.
Band King and Queen candidates were Lon Harvey and Kay Shuman.

Everyone thought they were such a cute couple because they both wore braces. By the way, you two, how did you keep them from getting locked up?

This year the band made a trip to El Paso,Tx. for The Sun Bowl Parade. While at the game some of the girls spotted Burt Reynolds sitting in the press box and paid a nearby spectator a dollar a piece to use his binoculars for gazing purposes. Say girls, was Burt really worth a dollar a piece?

Our Senior Play was M*A*S*H snd the hightlights were seeing Kevin Walcher turn to a darker color and seeing Rhonda Little,Teri Casey and Kay Shuman attempt to dance.
Some of the Seniors activities have included the mysterious locker scandal. Everyone was quite surprised when they arrived to school one morning and found 78 stamped on the Senior's lockers. By the way Devery,Teri,Gina, and Kay, how did those 78's get on the lockers? Another interesting incident is Devery's attempt to run through a clothesline pole. It seems that Devery and Brian went knockin at Coach Goodners house and while making a fast get away,Devery KO-ed himself on the pole. Later, after Devery had his eye stitched up,he recieved word that Coach Goodner wasn't even home at the time. Great timing Devery.
The Seniors led the football team to a 9-2 season and their 3rd District title. Lon Harvey and John Brown recieved the Big E Award. Kevin Wacher won the Big E in baseball as the team won their first District title in 20 years. Steve Berry recieved the Big E in Golf and the Girls Basketball Big E went to Sherry Hoch.
