Of course all of our classmates who left Le Mars went so many different ways and so did Patty. Our paths crossed back in about 1979 when I wandered into a Dairy Queen in the Denver, CO area. After I ordered, the woman who took my order came around and sat down across from me at my table.
"Just like in study hall back in Le Mars," she said and smiled at me. A look of surprise crossed my face, but in a few moments a flood of memeories of LCHS spilled out. It was delightful.
Though we were never really friends back in those days, there is nothing like sharing a hometown and shared experiences to warm the heart. Shortly after that chance encounter my family and I moved on to live in Spain and never saw Patty again. But what stays with me is that she recognized me and was willing to reach out and share, she was willing to drop everything and share some precious time.
Patty is one of those classmates that I always wondered what she was doing and where she ended up...I am so sorry to learn of her passing. We weren't close friends, but she was a very nice, sweet person and I was drawn to those characteristics in her.
