Jim and I have been married for 50 years. we live in the woods in our house/studio complex built by us. we started it 35 years ago; it is an ongoing project.
We lived in Leonia from '61-'66. Jim had a pottery behind my parents Christie Heights st. house. He was part of the annual tour of artist studios and sold wares in N.Y.C.
We moved to Greensboro, NC where Jim set up the pottery for U.N.C.G. By then we had four kids. In 1970 we came to U.G.A. (Athens, Ga). Jim taught Sculpture/bronze casting for 30 years. Allthis time I cooked, cleaned and took care of our children,
helped build our home in the woods, was a realtor and then had an antiques shop. I have collected Southern handmade furniture c.1800- on, for our house.
Jim and I have traveled around our country several times, once on a Ford Foundation Research Grant: viewing and documenting Land Project Sculptures, (Lightning Field in New Mexico and Spiral Jetty in the Great Salt Lake,Utah were two of the projects we visited.
For the past 10 years we have been regularly travelling to Copan, Oklahoma to interact with Jims Lenape'
relatives.
Our children live within 6 miles of us. Nona, 49, married, four children and one grandchild. Business oriented, she and her husband Mike Thornton are entrepreneurs and developers.
Sara at 21 died in a car accident, 1981. She was a singer and a poet.
Bruce, 44, Artist (figurative painter)/gallery owner with wife Tracy Jefferies. www.towncenterfineart.net
Lance, 40, Radioligist with 2 sons. Recently divorced, half custody father. Avid collector of Edgefield Pottery, Southern folk pottery, and early American crystal.
I loved growing up in Leonia. My hometown also became Jim's when we married. Our daughters had Miss Baxter for kindergarden; good early memories. Marching in a Brownie suit in the Memorial Day parade - Watching the box car races past L.H.S. down the Broad Avenue hill - Wood park playground and library - Mrs. Frieze was a wonderful lady, suggesting books for me to read during long hot summers. It was fun to take my children there too.
Living accross from the L.H.S. playing field, an eye on its world from our 3rd floorwindow.
The Leonia Follies - Betty Ellis' Mother spurring us on to dance and sing.
I missed the interaction of you fellow class mates when I graduated early. The timing was destined. I went out to BYU fall of 1957 and Jim was returning. "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" describes our thoughts and fleeings, and still does. We married April 1, 1958 and you guys gave us a wonderful party at the Girl Scout Little House. We still cherish the Bates Queen Elizabeth bed spread that was a group gift from y'all.
