 HAMMOND, Susan Elaine, 67, of Lexington, wife of Gerald Smith, passed away Wednesday, July 6, 2016. She was born to the late Claude Ellis Hammond and Catherine Corter Cooper Hammond on July 16, 1948 in Lexington.
Susan was a graduate of the University of Alabama and received her Master’s Degree in English from the University of Kentucky.
She had a long and distinguished career in public relations. She served as managing editor of The Thoroughbred Record and was supervisor of writers in the Department of Public Information under Governor Julian Carroll. She founded Pitch Advertising where she produced The Winner’s Circle and Inside Harness Racing for television. She was editor or producer for more than 400 television commercials. Pitch was prominent in statewide and local politics. She was an owner of WBRT AM/FM in Bardstown, KY.
Susan was a beloved friend, devoted animal lover and avid gardener. She was the perfect audience for the understated wit of her husband of nearly 39 years, Gerald Smith, with whom she ran campaigns across the state while developing lasting friendships.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her brother Thomas Taylor Hammond, his wife Sheilagh, and their children; brother Claude Hammond, his wife Chris Baker, and his children; sister Anne Proffitt, her husband Doug, and their children.
Visitation Sunday from 5-7pm at Milward-Southland. Funeral Monday at 11am at Second Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow at Lexington Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Woodford Humane Society.

Such a sweet lady.....I always liked Susan very much!!!! Saw her the last time at John Ishmael's funeral and told her I would see her at our 50th. You will be in our thoughts and prayers Susan.....RIP

Just got back from Susan's visitation. She had breathing and lung problems.....went into the hospital....they told her she needed a lung transplant to survive.....UK would not approve her.....maybe because they did not think she could survive the surgery.....so she did not make it. Her husband said they knew it was not good unless she got the transplant, but they did not expect it this soon.....so it was a big surprise to all of them.

This news has been a punch in the gut. Susan and I were best friends from the 8th grade-12th. We had many adventures together. Many of them around Susan's crush on Teddy Mims.She took me to my first UK basketball game and I've been a fan ever since that time. We stayed in touch after high school for several years. She was part of my wedding and co-hosted a baby shower with Debbie Newman Ray for me. I would call and talk to her when I was in town to visit my Mom. Somehow, she became busy and I had family things when in Lexington and we lost touch. I am so sad that I will not have another opportunity to giggle with her again.

The shocking passing of Susan is yet another somber reminder of our mortality and a reason not to take anyone for granite. Like Jackie (Hi Jackie!), I had not kept up in the past few years but I always considered Susan an important part of my past. Gerald and Susan visited my wife and I in N CA a couple times and I stopped by to see her several times when visiting Lexington. I always considered her beautiful, witty, intelligent, funny and a kick to talk with. She was on my list to visit during the week of the reunion. I will be thinking of her…….
