In Memory

William Vanderford

William Vanderford

Mark Bach

I was with Bill Vanderford when he passed away. Myself, Doug Hicks, Gregg Stokke, Gary Luft, Steve Harrison, Gary Suesz and "Bo" were with us and Bill on motorcycles in Kearney.  A car ran a STOP sign and hit Bill. He passed on shortly after he was taken to the hospital.  You can't imagine how hard it was to call his parents with such terrible news. That next morning when we all rode our motorcycles back to Lincoln it had to be the LONELIEST motorcycle trip any of us ever took.

I remember when Bill's accident was. His dad and my dad bowled on the same league down at the Bowlmor? Next to the Gaslight Lounge. I was there watching my dad, when Bill's dad got the call. I didn't know it happened in Kearney and thought it happened in Lincoln. I suppose in all the commotion, there could be miscommunication.

I cannot imagine what Mark Bach, Doug Hicks, Gregg Stokke, Gary Luft, Steve Harrison, Gary Suesz and the late Bob Bohaty went through witnessing a death of a friend.  My thoughts and prayers still go out to you guys.

I met Bill at Culler Junior High.  If I had a class with Bill and it was in alphabetical order we sat by each other.  We also loved the game of basketball & loved music. A couple years after High School Bill and I worked at Havelock Shops together. When Bill died he was probably my best friend at the time.  We worked together, golfed together, played basketball together & after 2nd shift would stay up half the night playing music. Doug I'm sorry for those times we woke you up.  I remember when Bill got his Bi-Centennial Gold Wing.  He was so proud of that bike. It was only one of two-hundred made.  Two days before he died we rode on it together.  I'll never forget when I walked into work at Havelock Shops.  It was so silent.  I didn't know Bill had passed away.  Then someone told me.  I asked Alphie the foreman if I could leave and he said "I'm surprised your here!!".  As a young man this was very hard to handle and lingered with me for many years.  We Loved You Bill!!   Thanks Bill For Your Friendship~~~~~Bob Vance
