In Memory

Marilyn Sykes (Erickson)

Norman Golden and Marilyn were first cousins, and he has been gracious enough to share the following about Marilyn for us:

Marilyn Arlene (Sykes) Erickson March 30, 1963- October 19, 2004. She was diagnosed with colon cancer originally but it spread to her liver and then lungs. She went thru 2 rounds of chemo and radiation and nothing stopped it. She lived about 3 years after diagnosis of cancer. She passed away in her husbands arms and was cremated. She requested her ashes be spread along the ocean on the Oregon coast where she loved to go. She was a devout christian her entire life.

Below is a poem that Marilyn's sister Dorothy wrote for her after she died.

God Saw You

God saw you getting tired
When a cure was not to be,
So he closed his arms around you
And whispered, "Come to me".
You didn't deserve
What you went through
And so he gave you rest;
God's garden must be beautiful,
He only takes the best.
And when I saw you sleeping
So peaceful and free from pain,
I could not wish you back
To suffer that again.

In reading about Marilyn in this section of the website, I feel a deep sorrow.  Marilyn, Cherrye Buchanan, Karen Griffin, Lisa Mosley and I  all hung around together at CJHS from 7th grade til 10th grade.  In 10th grade we would all go to lunch someone's house each day...Or go down Geyer Springs for lunch... Especially after Cherrye got her car.   When I got the news that my cousin had been shot, I had ALL of my best friends to help me through it.. As well as, if anything bad (or good) happened in our lives, we were there with and for each other.  When I read this, I felt like I had to call Cherrye and let her know that one of us have left.  I have had Marilyn on my mind alot since this website has been made.. I just wish that I could have found her in another way than this.  I still keep in touch with Cherrye, who sees Karen occassionally, but I have lost touch with Lisa.  I hope to see more friends and classmates at our reunion in july '11.  Marilyn, you will be missed.  I am sorry I never found you sooner.

Kera, I too was sad & shocked when I saw that Marilyn was gone. Marilyn & I ran around together after we got out of high school. My husband & her boyfriend (later her husband) (Dano) were room mates in the Air Force. Marilyn met Dano first & then introduced me to his room mate. Marilyn was a bridesmaid in my wedding & then several months later I was a bridesmaid in her wedding. Marilyn & Dano soon moved back to his home state of Washington after he got out of the military. We lost contact with them after that. My husband Scott & I have often wondered how they were doing but we're never able to find out how to get in touch with them. I had no idea she had passed away. We had many good times together. She will be missed.

Denise, I am glad you and Marilyn became such good friends.  Thank you for filling in some blanks.  Peggy Latimer spoke to Mike Pate...He said he saw Marilyn's mom a few years ago and she had said Marilyn died of cancer.  We tend to take life for granted and just assume we'll always be able to look up old friends.  Again, thank you for filling in some blanks.   Also, i saw where Melody McGraw passed away.  I am very sorry for your loss.  I remember how ya'll were friends in school.
