Beverly Billingsley of Little Rock, Arkansas died on January 6, 2016. She was born to Doris Wilson Thibodeaux and John Louis Thibodeaux of Covington, Louisiana on April 23, 1928. She was a graduate of St. Scholastic Academy and the University of Southwestern Louisiana - now the University of Louisiana - Lafayette. She got a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in English and Speech and minoring in Social Studies. She taught in high school in south Louisiana for six years and twenty-

eight years for the Pulaski County Special School District, first at Mabelvale High, then

at McClellan High. She was the yearbook advisor for twenty-three years. In 1978 she

was named "Advisor of the Year" at the Arkansas High School Press Association

Convention. In 1983 she re-started debate at McClellan and built the teams from 0 - 27

students in three years. They traveled all over to debate tournaments, winning many

trophies. Many of her students are now lawyers.

 

In 1986 she received one of the first Stephens' awards - $5,000 - for "Outstanding

Teacher" in Little Rock. She retired from public school teaching after 34 years in 1987. She began teaching English and Global Studies at Catholic High for Boys in 1988. She sponsored the Political Awareness Club. She always had been interested in politics since attending Louisiana Girls State in 1944. She served as an alderman in Cammack Village for ten years. As an avid Democrat, Mrs. Billingsley donated money and campaigned for their candidates. Her favorite candidate was Representative Vic Snyder.

 

Her main hobbies were boating, camping, gardening, and reading good books.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Bill Billingsley.

 

She is survived by daughter, Carolyn Bridges Levy of Chapel Hill, NC; granddaughter, Jessica Levy of Key Largo, FL; and stepson, Jim Billingsley of Yuma, AZ.

 

Visitation will be held, 6:00 to 7:00 p.m., Friday, January 8, 2016 at Griffin Leggett Healey & Roth Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held, 10:00 a.m., Saturday, January 9, 2016 at Griffin Leggett Healey & Roth Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Forest Hills Memorial Park.
