Caroline Pruitt (Ashe)

I had this poem and thought the class needs to read it. Share it if you want. We all know someone who is or has been in the military. Many won't be home for the holidays. This poem was written by a Marine. If you do send it, no need to put my name. Just the poem. Thanks.

TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS,
HE LIVED ALL ALONE,
IN A ONE BEDROOM HOUSE MADE OF
PLASTER AND STONE.

I HAD COME DOWN THE CHIMNEY
WITH PRESENTS TO GIVE,
AND TO SEE JUST WHO
IN THIS HOME DID LIVE.

I LOOKED ALL ABOUT,
A STRANGE SIGHT I DID SEE,
NO TINSEL, NO PRESENTS,
NOT EVEN A TREE.

NO STOCKING BY MANTLE,
JUST BOOTS FILLED WITH SAND,
ON THE WALL HUNG PICTURES
OF FAR DISTANT LANDS.

WITH MEDALS AND BADGES,
AWARDS OF ALL KINDS,
A SOBER THOUGHT
CAME THROUGH MY MIND.

FOR THIS HOUSE WAS DIFFERENT,
IT WAS DARK AND DREARY,
I FOUND THE HOME OF A SOLDIER,
ONCE I COULD SEE CLEARLY.

THE SOLDIER LAY SLEEPING,
SILENT, ALONE,
CURLED UP ON THE FLOOR
IN THIS ONE BEDROOM HOME.

THE FACE WAS SO GENTLE,
THE ROOM IN SUCH DISORDER,
NOT HOW I PICTURED
A UNITED STATES SOLDIER.

WAS THIS THE HERO
OF WHOM I'D JUST READ?
CURLED UP ON A PONCHO,
THE FLOOR FOR A BED?

I REALIZED THE FAMILIES
THAT I SAW THIS NIGHT,
OWED THEIR LIVES TO THESE SOLDIERS
WHO WERE WILLING TO FIGHT.

SOON ROUND THE WORLD,
THE CHILDREN WOULD PLAY,
AND GROWNUPS WOULD CELEBRATE
A BRIGHT CHRISTMAS DAY.

THEY ALL ENJOYED FREEDOM
EACH MONTH OF THE YEAR,
BECAUSE OF THE SOLDIERS,
LIKE THE ONE LYING HERE.

I COULDN'T HELP WONDER
HOW MANY LAY ALONE,
ON A COLD CHRISTMAS EVE
IN A LAND FAR FROM HOME.

THE VERY THOUGHT
BROUGHT A TEAR TO MY EYE,
I DROPPED TO MY KNEES
AND STARTED TO CRY.

THE SOLDIER AWAKENED
AND I HEARD A ROUGH VOICE,
'SANTA DON'T CRY,
THIS LIFE IS MY CHOICE;

I FIGHT FOR FREEDOM,
I DON'T ASK FOR MORE,
MY LIFE IS MY GOD,
MY COUNTRY, MY CORPS.'
THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER
AND DRIFTED TO SLEEP,
I COULDN'T CONTROL IT,
I CONTINUED TO WEEP.

I KEPT WATCH FOR HOURS,
SO SILENT AND STILL
AND WE BOTH SHIVERED
FROM THE COLD NIGHT'S CHILL.

I DIDN'T WANT TO LEAVE
ON THAT COLD, DARK, NIGHT,
THIS GUARDIAN OF HONOR
SO WILLING TO FIGHT.

THEN THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER,
WITH A VOICE SOFT AND PURE,
WHISPERED, 'CARRY ON SANTA,
IT'S CHRISTMAS DAY, ALL IS SECURE.'

ONE LOOK AT MY WATCH,
AND I KNEW HE WAS RIGHT.
'MERRY CHRISTMAS MY FRIEND,
AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT.'

This poem was written by a Marine.

thanks steph... i appreciate it much... my "mammaw" was a good woman and a good friend to me even in my wild times(which i still live) she always told me she was gonna "woop" me if i didn't straighten up, get married, and settle down... she always had a smile on her face... she would not let anyone else give me static about anything i did... she taught me how to cook some good old food like collard greens, baked turnips, any kind of beans, and of course corn bread from scratch, and how to make jelly and preserves, and how to can pickles and peppers... she never went a day without telling me about our Lord and Savior... i will miss her, but i know she is up there teaching someone how to make jelly... i gotta make jelly this weekend. thanks steph...

Stan Wade, so sorry for your loss! I will have to send you some lyrics to a song a buddy of mine from Ft. Smith wrote. The song was called "Grandmas recipe" I played it at my Grandma's funeral. The way you described her sounds just like the song. Prayers to you!

Wade it is so sad to loose someone so precious but the memories sound incredible. She will always be in your heart and mind. Sounds like she may have learned how to cook the same place my relatives learned! Good food and memories - that's great to keep forever.
We are actually in the last days of Dave's uncle Bill and it is so precious to hear everything he says and hold on to so many memories of vacations, God and family.
Celebrate her life as you are doing and know our whole class is thinking of you during this time. We have all lost precious people in our lives.
Godspeed,
Bendi and David

Catching up....

The care packages have been sent to our Lions that are in Iraq and Afghanistan. They should have them to enjoy well before Christmas. Thank you to everyone that participated in this project. It was really a group effort and it wouldn't have been nearly as good without everyone that helped!!

There are still tickets available for Tony's Elvis Show this Saturday Night (Dec. 13). He will be performing with the Fever Band, a professional Elvis Tribute band. If you haven't seen Tony in concert this is the one to see! If you have, the addition of the band upgrades what you have seen, and makes it a whole new experience!

If you want to sit with classmates, contact me and I'll help you. An after party is planned so we can visit and share a little holiday cheer...holla at me if you are interested in joining us for that.

I'm looking forward to seeing everyone this weekend!!

I just wanted to thank everyone for the outpouring of thoughts and prayers during this very, very sad time in our life. No parent should ever have to bury their child!

Please everyone keep your children and grandchildren very close to your heart and never take anything for granted. Life is way too short!

God Bless!

David and Bendi, Congrats on your son's State Championship!! I know the feeling and the pride you feel for your son and town. It is a great feeling!

Thanks Mike we are all proud of the Tigers; however, Jeremy had to quit football at the beginning of the season due to 2 ACL surgeries in his prior seasons. It's just too risky to tear them up again. He was really bummed that he couldn't be part of it - yet so proud at the same time. We have lots of friends who got to play that day and it was a proud moment for all of us...

Brena - you and your family remain in so many of our thoughts and prayers. We love you!

GRANDMA'S RECIPE
music & lyrics by Jerry Glidewell and Chad Little
copyright 2005

1) She could spread a world of happiness, with her gentle touch

Her kitchen was a sacred place, where she looked after us.

And anytime that we were troubled, or had a hungry soul to feed

We could always find a sweet surprise, with Grandma's recipe.

2) She would always speak so fondly, of that day in '45

When Grandpa fell in love with her, and she became his bride

He was captured by her beauty, but somehow I still believe

What really won him over was that woman's recipe.

CHORUS: She had a way of knowing, how to fix things up

with a little hint of wisdom, and a whole lotta love

She never failed to serve the Lord, and that's why I believe

we could always taste the good life with Grandma's recipe.

3) Well I try to teach my children, those things I learned from her

Sometimes they just don't understand, but one thing is for sure

When I see them with my mama, it brings a smile to me

cause there's something in the magic of, Grandma's Recipe.

CHORUS: She has a way of knowing, how to fix things up

with a little hint of wisdom, and a whole lotta love

She never fails to serve the Lord, and that's why I believe

they will always taste the good life, with Grandma's Recipe

Yes, you can always taste the good life, with Grandma's Recipe.

OMG!!!

Tony should always sing with a band.

For those of you that missed tonight's concert....sorry for you.

I have seen all of Tony's local performances since our reunion, and tonight's was by far the best.

The lights, sound system and the Fever band made the concert seem as if we were seeing Elvis in person. His voice is amazing...and he has learned some moves that surely weren't taught by the late great David D.

Make plans now to see his next show. It won't be long till he's too big for Little Rock.

Merry Christmas to everyone and have a Happy New Year.

Merry Christmas everyone! Ok, the countdown clock on the main screen is a little stressful....1 day! I still can't seem to get everything I originally wanted to accomplish, done. :) I guess that was not as important as I originally thought! We have to keep the true meaning of Christmas in our heart during this week. We are very fortunate in America to have our lives, our freedom and safety, and even more blessed if we have our health, families close by and good friends. Have peace and enjoy time with family and friends this week and always... be blessed!
ALSO:
I have an update on one of our missing classmates. I just found Cindy Jackson Wilkerson through my aunt who is now a resident at Grace Healthcare of Benton on Alcoa Rd. This is a Nursing Home and Rehabilitation center. Cindy has evidently suffered 5 strokes since her early 30's. As we understand through the center, she is alone and doesn't have family to visit with her. Her Mom died early this year and her children are far away. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers and if anyone can go by and say hello to her, that would be great. We are in Bentonville and can't see her until January.

I just received the following message from Keith Evans. He is still in Kabul, Afghanistan, fighting for our country. Please continue to keep him, and all of the troops, in your thoughts and prayers this holiday season.

"Stephanie,

I received the care package from the class of '83. Please thank Gina Martin Eggebrecht and all of those for me for taking the time to send me a care package. Everything was much appreciated. The cookies went fast - ha ha ha. The snow is all over the mountains here now. I have some pictures I will try to send to you. Thanksgiving was a real blast. Woke up with a suicide bomber blowing his car up outside our compound. Anyway, thanks for all you do for the class of 83. I hope you have a Merry Christmas. We get a half day off...woo hoo! Take care and please thank all of those people who have had me in their thoughts!

Keith"
